Description
Château Calon-Ségur and the history of the estate
Château Calon-Ségur is a historic name in Bordeaux and has enjoyed international fame as a Third Classified Growth since 1855. Located in the northern part of the Médoc, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the estate was originally managed by the Marquis de Ségur – who also owned Lafite and Latour – but had Calon-Ségur in his heart. Since 2012, the estate has been owned by the French insurance company Suravenir. Under the leadership of technical director Vincent Millet and oenologist Éric Boissenot, Calon-Ségur has further evolved towards precision and terroir expression.
Location, soil structure and climatic characteristics
The 55-hectare vineyard of Calon-Ségur is located on a plateau with a thick gravel layer of Quaternary origin, with a subsoil of clay from the Tertiary. On top of the gravel is a fine layer of lacustrine clay. This complex soil structure provides excellent drainage, water retention and thermal regulation – essential for balanced ripening of the grapes in the cool, maritime climate of the Médoc.
Grape composition and harvest for Château Calon-Ségur 2024
The blend for the 2024 vintage is composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines is 21 years and the planting density is 8,000 vines per hectare. The grapes were harvested by hand between September 23 (Merlot) and October 9 (Cabernet and Petit Verdot), with preliminary selection on the vine and mechanical and manual sorting on the estate.
Vinification and maturation of Château Calon-Ségur 2024
After a strict selection, the grapes underwent vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel tronconical tanks. Maceration lasted 18 to 21 days. Micro-bubbling, co-inoculation with exogenous yeasts and bacteria at 25°C were used. The wine was aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak, which contributed structure and complexity without masking the pure fruit expression.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of Château Calon-Ségur 2024
The wine has a deep ruby red colour with purple reflections. On the nose, the 2024 shows itself intense and layered, with aromas of blackcurrants, plums, cedar and violets. Subtle spicy accents and mineral nuances enhance the complexity. The attack on the palate is full and concentrated, with refined tannin structure, lively acidity and a persistent, elegant finish. The wine is powerful but perfectly balanced and offers excellent ageing potential.

The 2024 Calon-Ségur is a terrific effort. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon (picked late, between October 2 and October 9), 9% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, it unwinds in the glass with notes of plums, cassis and iris mingled with hints of burning embers and incense. Medium to full-bodied, supple and layered, it's suave and seamless, with good depth at the core, powdery tannins and beautifully integrated acids. At pH 3.50 and 13.1% alcohol, it's also one of the most classically proportioned vintages this estate has produced over the last decade.

A fruity wine that’s approachable but still serious and complex, with cocoa, currants, paprika and berries. Medium- to full-bodied. The tannins are taut, chalky, caressing and superbly knit with the fruit. Really juicy and long, and there aren't any hard edges. 82% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot, 8% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Calon Ségur was picked from September 23 until October 9 at 45 hl/ha with no breaks between those dates. It then matured in 100% new oak, as usual, for 20 months. This has a well-defined bouquet, with more prominent wood than previous recent vintages, which consequently obscures the property's DNA. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit tinged with black olive. It's quite lively, with a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and thyme. I admire the freshness of this Saint-Estèphe and there is decent length on the finish. This is not a top-ranking Calon-Ségur, but it should still provide up to 20 years of drinking pleasure.

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
The 2024 Calon Ségur is shaping up very nicely. Dark and ample, with terrific balance, the 2024 is another strong wine from the team led by Technical Director Vincent Millet. Readers will find a Calon Ségur of inner strength, its deceptively mid-weight structure notwithstanding. The 2024 is a wine of restraint and class more than power, never a bad thing at this property. The 100% new oak is very nicely balanced, even in the early going. This has great potential.
