Old Château Certan 2023

Overview

Vieux Château Certan, one of the oldest and most respected châteaux in Pomerol, has produced another exceptional wine in 2023. The blend is 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc and has an alcohol content of 14% and a pH of 3.74. The wine was rated by William Kelley with a score of 94-96 points.

Tasting notes

The 2023 Vieux Château Certan opens with exuberant aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings, violets, burning charcoal, iris, crushed mint and black tea. This medium to full-bodied wine is velvety and sensual, with a rich attack that flows into a layered, enveloping mid-palate. The wine has a polished and perfumed finish, with a sweet core of fruit and a long, subtly oak-influenced finish.

Climate and Harvest

The 2023 vintage was characterized by moderate weather conditions until harvest. Flowering was smooth and the véraison (coloring of the grapes) already occurred in mid-July, without extreme heat or water stress. Summer temperatures rose in late August, which allowed for optimal ripening of the grapes. The harvest took place from September 18 to 29.

Vineyard Management and Vinification

The terroir of Vieux Château Certan is situated in a unique location with soils ranging from clay to gravel. The vineyards cover 14 hectares and are divided into 23 plots, each managed individually according to soil type and grape variety. The average age of the vines is 50 years, which contributes to the complexity and depth of the wines.

Vinification at Vieux Château Certan combines traditional methods with modern techniques. The grapes are carefully selected and undergo gentle extraction at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks, followed by maturation in barrels, two-thirds of which are new oak.

History

Vieux Château Certan was founded at the beginning of the 16th century by the Demay family from Scotland and appeared on the map of Belleyme in 1785 under the name "Sertan". In 1858 it became the property of Charles de Bousquet, who had the current chateau buildings built. In 1924, the Flemish wine merchant Georges Thienpont bought the property, which marked the beginning of the Thienpont family's presence in the Bordeaux region.

Today, Vieux Château Certan is managed by Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont, who continue the tradition and craftsmanship, resulting in wines of exceptional quality and elegance. The chateau is a true embodiment of the rich history and unique terroir of Pomerol.

Conclusion

The 2023 Vieux Château Certan is a stunning wine that combines exotic aromas, deep layers of fruit and sublime textures. The result is a wine of great refinement and power, with excellent ageing potential. This wine is a perfect reflection of the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Vieux Château Certan, and will be admired for many years to come.

Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaus in Pomerol. It was founded at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on Belleyme's 1785 map under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place name Certan is taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924 Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.

Covering an area of 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 23 plots, each managed separately according to the soil type, the grape variety planted and the age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and contain a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a gravel-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Taking into account the total area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem where the soil, vines and climate merge harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The Vieux Château Certan cellars optimally combine tradition with today's technicality and precision. The vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to ensure a gentle, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a much more elegant result.

Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
