The history of Vieux Château Certan and the Pomerol region
Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest and most respected wine estates in Pomerol, Bordeaux. The château is located in the heart of the appellation and dates back to the 18th century. Since 1924 it has been owned by the Thienpont family, known for Château Le Pin among other things. The estate covers approximately 14 hectares of exceptional terroir, situated on the characteristic Pomerol plateau with rich clay and gravel soils. Unlike many Bordeaux wines, Pomerol has no official classification, but Vieux Château Certan is undisputedly among the top of the appellation.
The climate and terroir of Pomerol
The climate in Pomerol is temperate maritime, which ensures mild winters and warm but not extreme summers. The soil of Vieux Château Certan is rich in clay with iron-bearing layers, which is ideal for Merlot and also provides finesse for Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This unique terroir contributes to the deep structure, elegance and longevity of the wines.
Composition and grape varieties of the Vieux Château Certan 2024
The 2024 harvest began on July 24th with early bunch selection and was completed between September 20th and October 2nd, depending on the grape variety. The blend for this vintage is 71% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Merlot provides softness and fruit intensity, the Cabernet Franc adds aromas and complexity and the Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure and a floral finish. The alcohol content is 13.5% with a pH of 3.70.
Vinification and maturation of the 2024 vintage
The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully selected. Malolactic fermentation took place between October 24 and November 12, 2024. Thanks to a relatively dry, but not extremely hot summer, the fruit was able to ripen perfectly. The grapes are in perfect balance between ripeness and freshness, with a yield of only 30 hectoliters per hectare, which contributes to the intensity of the wine.
Color, aroma and taste of Vieux Château Certan 2024
This wine presents itself with a deep ruby red color. In the nose it opens with notes of ripe black cherries, violets, graphite and subtle wood influences. In the mouth it shows a full and supple character with layers of dark fruit, spices and elegant tannins. The long finish is characterized by freshness and aromatic complexity. The wine offers a wonderful balance between power and refinement and has great aging potential.

A blend of 71% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2024 Vieux Château Certan opens in the glass with brooding aromas of dark berries, cedar, cigar wrapper, crushed mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, with good density for the vintage and sweet structuring tannins, it concludes with a sapid, slightly earthy finish. Yields after annual sorting came in at 30 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is being matured in two-thirds new barriques.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Vieux Château Certan contains a higher proportion of Cabernet this year (23% Sauvignon and Franc combined) that was picked at 30 hl/ha between September 20 to October 2. That Cabernet is articulated on the nose: graphite and light tobacco scents percolating through the mainly black fruit. This has plenty of freshness and more fruit than some other Pomerol cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is much more weight and density on the back palate than nearly all of its peers. Distinctly peppery and quite spicy in style, this is one of the few to transcend the strict limitations of the growing season. In some ways, it is an uncompromising VCC that does not have the finesse of the greatest vintages I have tasted over the years, yet there is flavour and substance packed inside this nascent wine. Deeply impressive. This is one of the very few '24s that will oblige bottle age.

Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont have overseen some of the greatest vintages produced at this Pomerol estate in recent years. Take that from someone lucky enough to have tasted most of them.
“Mildew was high, but it was only on the leaves,” Thienpont Jr. told me. “We first noticed this during primeur week. We did more than the usual number of treatments, about 15 in total. It is a cool-climate vintage in a Cabernet style, traits that historically contradict each other. You had to wait for the ripeness and risk the rot, then be light in terms of extraction. We did not do any chaptalisation. The last time we did that was in 1984.

Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaus in Pomerol. It was founded at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on Belleyme's 1785 map under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place name Certan is taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924 Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Covering an area of 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 23 plots, each managed separately according to the soil type, the grape variety planted and the age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and contain a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a gravel-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Taking into account the total area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem where the soil, vines and climate merge harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The Vieux Château Certan cellars optimally combine tradition with today's technicality and precision. The vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to ensure a gentle, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a much more elegant result.
Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
