Description
Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaus in Pomerol. It was founded in the early 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on the 1785 map of Belleyme under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol the place name Certan was taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Covering an area of 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 23 plots, each managed separately according to soil type, grape variety planted and age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and include a very clayey part planted with mainly Merlot (70%), a gravelly-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Taking into account the total surface area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, ensure that the different grape varieties reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem in which the soil, the vines and the climate merge harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The cellars of Vieux Château Certan optimally combine tradition with the technology and precision of today. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to ensure a gentle, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a clearly more elegant result.
From winter to spring, the first half of 2018 was characterized by mild temperatures and very heavy rainfall. At the end of May, after optimal flowering, a wonderfully hot and dry summer began for a long period. Thanks to the water reserves built up in the spring, the vines were able to cope well with the severe water stress that followed in the summer. The old vines, whose vigor was favorably slowed by this drought, produced beautifully deep-colored, concentrated and balanced wines. The fully ripe Merlot brought all its strength into the wine and provided a stable base during blending. The Cabernet Franc, present in its entirety this year, enhanced the blend with its unctuous, velvety texture and excellent length of flavor.
This wine is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Vieux Château Certan 2018 shows a deep crimson hue of rare intensity, beautiful aromas of ripe fruit and violets. The amazing balance between freshness and ripeness ensures that all the qualities of a great, long-matured vintage come to the fore.

The 2018 Vieux Château Certan is composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, weighing in with 14.4% alcohol and an IPT (total polyphenol index) of 77. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is locked down tight at this youthful stage, requiring a lot of patient swirling to release a profound powerhouse of a perfume: preserved plums, blueberry compote, ripe black cherries and boysenberries, leading to suggestions of Indian spices, lilacs, espresso and licorice, plus a waft of sandalwood. The medium to full-bodied palate has an amazing sense of cohesiveness. There are no edges to the seamless flow of exquisitely fine-grained tannins and perfectly knit acidity, beautifully framing the blue and black fruits, which are at once elegant and also so, so rich. It finishes with many slowly lapping waves of minerals and exotic spices, which just go on and on. It is a wine that is, simply put, an experience not to be missed. Give it a good 6-8 years in the cellar and drink it over the next 30 years or more.
“It was a vintage of contrasts,” began Guillaume Thienpont. “It was hard with the mildew at the beginning. There were some spots on the canopy, but fortunately the fruit was intact.” Vieux Château Certan's Merlot was harvested September 24-26, and then they had to wait for the Cabernet Franc. “We waited and waited until early October,” Guillaume said. “Then it rained a little on October 3. It was just enough to push the vines through. We finished picking on October 10. We were one of the last to pick! But we were so happy. The tannins are like cashmere this year. This year, Cabernet Franc was not just useful—it was necessary.” As for the winemaking: “The extraction was very soft, just like flipping a piece of meat on a grill,” Alexandre, Guillaume’s father, added with a smile.

This is a significant VCC with masses of fruit and juicy tannins. It’s fresh, but impresses you with the rich and powerful fruit. A tower of a wine. Incredible depth and density. Thick and muscular. It is 30 per cent cabernet franc, the rest merlot.

The 2018 Vieux Château Certan is delicate, silky and understated, just as it was in barrel. Inky blue/purplish berry fruit, mint, lavender, spice and wild flowers all open in the glass. The 30% Cabernet Franc, which is high for present-day standards, adds tons of aromatic lift as well as freshness, while bright, saline-infused notes extend the finish. Fine tannins and mid-weight structure give the 2018 an air of finesse that is impossible to miss. If I had to bet on one 2018 that could very well surprise 10-20 years out, it might very well be VCC.

Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
