Description
Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaux in Pomerol. It was founded at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on the Belleyme map of 1785 under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place name Certan was taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924, Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Covering 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard is made up of 23 plots, each managed separately according to the soil type, the grape variety planted and the age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and include a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a gravelly-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Considering the total surface area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem in which the soil, the vines and the climate blend harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The cellars of Vieux Château Certan optimally combine tradition with the technicality and precision of today. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to ensure a soft, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a clearly more elegant result.
The 2020 Vieux Château Certain is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc (no Cabernet Sauvignon this year). Drought curbed vigor, particularly in the older vines, and picking was carried out from 14-24 September for the Merlot and 28-29 September for the Cabernet Franc. The Vieux Château Certain is another beautiful wine (100/100 Vinous) with sumptuous black cherries, blueberries and shavings of black truffle and iodine that become increasingly floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive structure and great freshness. There is plenty of juicy black fruit and a finish that copies the Lafleur (despite having less Cabernet Franc).

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Vieux Château Certan bursts with aromas of blackberries, sweet spices, rose petals, orange zest, burning embers and violets framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's rich and layered, with a more broad, unctuous profile than the pure and refined 2019, concluding with a long, resonant finish. This is more immediate out of the gates than the 2019, and I suspect it will not prove quite as long lived, but it is a terrific effort from the Thienpont family.
This 14-hectare estate, divided into some 23 distinct parcels, has produced another compelling wine in 2020. Alexandre Thienpont (who took the reins in 1986) and his thoughtful son Guillaume (who is following in his father's footsteps) work simply but attentively; there's no smoke nor mirrors at this address, just a terrific terroir (composed of around one-third gravel soils, one-third clay-gravel soils and one-third clay soils), planted with some 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and winemaking that brings out its best. After classical macerations, the new wines mature in 65% new oak from Séguin Moreau and Sylvain for 18 months. The second wine, La Gravette de Certan, is entirely Merlot, mostly from vines planted in 2010, along with a small plot dating back to 1998.

Real Pomerol here with black berry, chocolate, hazelnut and walnut aromas and flavors. Dark fruits. Crushed stone. It’s full and intense with great focus. Powerful yet so balanced and intense. Juicy center palate. Fantastic length. Great clarity. Drink after 2028.

From: Memories Elide: Vieux Château Certan 1923-2020 (Jul 2024)
The 2020 Vieux Château Certan was picked from September 14 at a low yield of 30hl/ha. The nose might be even better than the 2019 with blackberry, black truffle, pencil shavings and a touch of sous-bois. The aromatics are heavenly, perhaps even more complex than the 2016. The palate is medium-bodied with a satin-textured entry and fabulous delineation. This is a Pomerol whose engine purrs like a vintage Rolls Royce. Maybe the 2019 has a touch more edginess on the finish but this is the real deal. It's a sensational, multi-dimensional Pomerol for the ages. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium.

Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
