About the Vie di Romans winery in Friuli
The Vie di Romans winery, founded in 1978, is located in the Friuli Isonzo DOC region in northeastern Italy. Under the leadership of Gianfranco Gallo, Vie di Romans has become one of the most respected producers in the region. The estate operates with great respect for terroir and winemaking, vinifying each plot individually. The region is known for its alluvial soils of clay, gravel, and limestone, and benefits from the Adriatic climate with warm days and cool nights. This contributes to the expressiveness and freshness of the wines. Gianfranco Gallo of Vie di Romans was one of the first winemakers to see the potential of the Friuli alluvial plain. Over 30 years ago, he took over the estate from his father and released his first wine in 1978. Since 1990, almost all of his wines have been mono-varietal (made from the same grape variety), each from a single vineyard. Gianfranco has a unique winemaking style. He is intimately involved in every step of the process: from working in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps yields per hectare as low as possible and works as organically as possible. His wines first undergo cold maceration, after which they are fermented in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels (tonneaux and barriques). To preserve freshness (good acidity) in the wine, he does not perform malolactic fermentation. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines are aged for 8-9 months in stainless steel tanks or barriques on their lees.
Chardonnay from Vie di Romans: origin and grapes
The Chardonnay is a single-varietal wine, made from 100% Chardonnay grapes grown on the estate's own vineyards in the municipality of Mariano del Friuli. The soil consists of marl-rich alluvial deposits, which ensure good drainage and minerality. The grapes are harvested by hand with an average yield of 49 hl/ha. The wine is certified DOC Friuli Isonzo.
After harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and undergo temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation (18-19°C) in stainless steel tanks for about 10 days. The wine then matures on lees in stainless steel for 9 months, adding complexity and texture. Malolactic fermentation is deliberately avoided to preserve freshness. The wine is not filtered before bottling, which contributes to the wine's full-bodied character.
On the nose, we smell ripe fruit like pear, along with chamomile and floral notes. On the palate, this fine wine boasts beautiful layers of good acidity and a fine balance. The wine is creamy and rich with buttery almond, stone fruit, honey, and orange peel. At the same time, the wine is surprisingly light, fresh, and silky in texture. In terms of Chardonnay, this wine offers the full package. According to Monica Larner of Wine-advocate, this Vie de Romans Chardonnay is a must-have for any Chardonnay lover.

With nine months of élevage on the lees in barrique, the 2022 Friuli Isonzo Chardonnay Vie di Romans is a generous white with plenty of fruit weight. Prominent aromas of ripe peach and orchard fruit steal the show, but there are sweet notes of calla lily and hibiscus. There is even a savory hint of lavender, but the wine ends on a decidedly sweet note with a 14.5% alcohol content. Both attest to the hot 2022 growing season. This is an ample production of 66,500 bottles.
Vie di Romans completed construction on its new winery in 2023. The structure has three floors with a larger barrel room and a visitors center. Starting at the beginning of 2024, proprietor Gianfranco Gallo brought his wife and children into the winery management loop.

From: Friuli’s 2023 Vintage: Great Wine in the Face of Great Sacrifice (Oct 2025)
The 2023 Chardonnay Vie di Romans is distinctly floral and herbal in the best possible way. It lifts from the glass with nuances of sage and tropical melon complemented by a whiff of sweet spice. Opulent in feel, it has stunning acidity to balance. Glycerol textures wash across the senses with ripe pit fruits as crunchy mineral tones emerge toward the close. It finishes beautifully, squeaky clean yet long, leaving a lemony concentration and peppery inner florals to linger.
- By Eric Guido on October 2025
The challenges of the 2023 vintage resulted in some played nicely into the estate's elegant style, adding another dimension of floral, slightly green aromatics and a cool-toned feel that offsets the house’s typically weighty textures. Winemaker Gianfranco Gallo explained that Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc were less affected by the cool and rainy season. Still, harvest took place ten days later than usual, as Gallo elected to wait for physiological ripeness. Two different hailstorms on July 26 occurred within two hours of each other, wreaking havoc on the Ciampagnis Vieris vineyard. Canopies and grapes were damaged to the point that Gallo decided not to make the single-vineyard Chardonnay in 2023. All things considered, I love the 2023s here, and they grew on me the longer I sat with them. I was also highly impressed with Gallo’s Pinot Noir and Merlot projects. These two wines are seldom seen in the United States, something I hope to see change in the coming years.

The house Vie di Romans is located in the Isonzo - the lower part of Friuli - between the Adriatic Sea and Collio. Because the country warms up during the day and cools down again at night, it often blows here. These conditions are ideal for wine growing. The wind quickly blows the grapes dry when wet, so they hardly need to be treated with pesticides.

Thirty years ago he took over the domain from his father and in 1978 he released his first wine. He is particularly closely involved in every part of the process: from working in the vineyard to the cellar. He keeps the yields per hectare as low as possible and supervises the very strict use of pesticides - preferably none. The result is large, concentrated and complex wines that last a lifetime.
