Description
history of domaine michel niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon is a long-standing family estate in Chassagne-Montrachet. For generations, they have worked in harmony: traditional vinification, limited yields, and a strong focus on terroir. The vineyards are spread across several crus, including the premier cru Les Champ Gains, which reflects the estate's reputation as a producer of elegant and precise wines.
region, location and terroir of les champgains
Les Champgains is a prized premier cru located just east of the village center, on south- to southeast-facing slopes. The chalky soil, rich in marl and white chalk, creates a mineral freshness in the wines. The elevated location ensures cool nights, preserving the Chardonnay's aromatic profile.
vinification and wood use of 2023 michel niellon les champgains
The 2023 Les Champgains is made from hand-picked Chardonnay. The grapes are slowly pressed, followed by fermentation in French oak barrels containing approximately 30% new wood. The wine then matures for 12 months on the fine lees, with regular bâtonnage to develop roundness and texture without overpowering the terroir expression.
2023 vintage and harvest characteristics
2023 was a balanced year: a warm summer with intermittent rain ensured optimal ripening while maintaining acidity. The harvest yielded healthy, aromatic grapes with subtle citrus notes and ripe white fruit. The year is characterized by finesse, mineral tension, and ripe fruit notes.
color, aroma and flavor profile of Les Champgains
In the glass, the wine displays a bright straw yellow hue with subtle golden reflections. The nose opens with aromas of white peach, lemon confit, butter, and almond, followed by nuances of hazelnut and chalky minerality. The palate reveals a precise structure: fresh acidity, an elegant body, a fine mousse on the tongue, and a long, mineral finish with recurring fruit notes.
serving tips and storage potential
This 1er Cru is already exceptionally appealing, but will develop beautifully over the next 5 to 8 years. Serve at 10–12°C, and perhaps briefly pour into the glass. This will allow the wine to fully develop its balance of elegance, freshness, and complexity.

From: Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has wonderful definition and precision on the nose, hints of dried yellow flowers complementing the citrus fruit, the oak well integrated. The palate is very well balanced with a vibrant, orange-zest- and tangerine-tinged entry. It’s quite linear and taut, with an almost Puligny-like tension on the finish. This comes recommended. Tasted at merchants' 2022 Burgundy tastings in London.

Domaine Michel Niellon is a winery located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune region (Burgundy, France).
History of Domaine Michel Niellon
The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when the family was founded by Michel Niellon's grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundian wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are located at different altitudes between 200 and 400 meters, which contributes to the unique character of their wines. Michel Niellon keeps it traditional. Many of their vineyards still contain vines planted by Marcel Niellon in 1926. When replanting is necessary, they use low yielding clones to ensure the grapes produced are highly concentrated and of superior quality.
Production by Michel Niellon
Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are picked by hand and strictly selected for quality. The fermentation process is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (typically 15% to 30%). Malolactic conversion and Sur Lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their icon, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. In addition, the Chassagne-Montrachet's of this product are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.
