history of domaine michel niellon and clos de la maltroie

Domaine Michel Niellon is a family estate in Chassagne-Montrachet with generations of expertise. Clos de la Maltroie is one of the estate's most prized premier crus. The distinctive character of this specific cru stems from thorough selection and respect for the terroir.

location and terroir of clos de la maltroie 1er cru

Clos de la Maltroie is situated on a southwest-facing slope in the high northern part of Chassagne. The soil consists of limestone with marl and fine chalk. Due to the higher altitude and the submontane microclimate, the grapes ripen slowly, retaining freshness and mineral sharpness. These conditions contribute to the wine's tension and refinement.

vinification and maturation of the 2023 premier cru

The 2023 Chardonnay is harvested by hand, followed by a gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place entirely in French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which are new. After fermentation, it is aged for 12 months on fine lees, with regular bâtonnage. This method enhances the texture and complexity while preserving the terroir expression.

annual conditions and harvest characteristics in 2023

The 2023 growing season was characterized by a mild winter, a changeable spring, and a warm, dry summer with intense sunshine. Short periods of rain helped the grapes develop ripe and healthy, while retaining vibrant acidity and fresh fruit notes. The harvest yielded concentrated grapes with ripe white fruit and a distinct minerality.

color, smell and taste profile of the maltroie

This premier cru displays a bright, straw-yellow hue with diamond reflections. The nose opens with aromas of white peach, kumquat, almond, and a delicate touch of honey. Subtle floral notes, butter, and limestone follow. On the palate, the wine is taut and mineral, with lively acidity, a creamy texture, and a long, precise finish.

serving temperature and storage potential

The 2023 Clos de la Maltroie is already expressive, but will further distinguish itself over the next 10 years with its length and complexity. Serve at 10–12°C , with gentle aeration to further reveal the aromatic layers.

Domaine Michel Niellon is a winery located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation in the Côte de Beaune region (Burgundy, France).

History of Domaine Michel Niellon

The Niellon family has a long history of winemaking, dating back to the 19th century when the family was founded by Michel Niellon's grandfather, Léon Niellon. In the 1960s, Michel Niellon took over the family business from his father, Marcel Niellon, and continued the tradition of producing exceptional Burgundian wines. The estate has six hectares of vineyards, mainly located in the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. The vineyards are located at different altitudes between 200 and 400 meters, which contributes to the unique character of their wines. Michel Niellon keeps it traditional. Many of their vineyards still contain vines planted by Marcel Niellon in 1926. When replanting is necessary, they use low yielding clones to ensure the grapes produced are highly concentrated and of superior quality.

Production by Michel Niellon

Domaine Michel Niellon is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Both the Pinot Noir and the Chardonnay are picked by hand and strictly selected for quality. The fermentation process is initiated using the natural yeasts present on the grape skins. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a portion of new wood (typically 15% to 30%). Malolactic conversion and Sur Lie also take place in these wooden barrels. Domaine Michel Niellon is known for producing high-quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. Their icon, the Bâtard-Montrachet, is highly regarded. In addition, the Chassagne-Montrachet's of this product are known worldwide for their exceptional quality.
