Description
about Bodegas Mauro in Castilla y León
Bodegas Mauro was founded in 1980 by Mariano García, known for his long career at Vega Sicilia and Ossian . The winery is located in Tudela de Duero, in the province of Valladolid, and is now run by his sons. The García family owns approximately 90 hectares of vineyards in Tudela de Duero and Traspinedo, with an average age of 35 years. The plantings consist of carefully selected varieties that adapt to the microclimate of the Duero Valley. Mauro is primarily known for its refined red wines, but with Mauro Godello, the family demonstrates that white wines also have a future here. The goal is to produce wines with precision, freshness, and a clear identity, always with respect for the terroir and nature.
region and climate by Mauro Godello
Mauro Godello comes from the Bierzo region in northwestern Castilla y León, where the climate is influenced by Atlantic influences. The vineyards are situated on high-altitude plots with soils of sand, weathered slate, and alluvial stones. This poor, well-drained soil produces low yields and concentrated grapes with a pronounced mineral character. Daytime temperatures are warm enough for optimal ripening, while cool nights preserve acidity and tension in the wine. This balance between ripeness and freshness is precisely what defines Mauro Godello's style: full-bodied, layered, and simultaneously vibrant.
the godello grape and the 2023 harvest
Godello is an indigenous white grape from northwestern Spain. It is known for its ability to combine both richness and freshness. In 2023, the region experienced a warm growing season with high temperatures in August, resulting in an early harvest on August 28th. Rain in early September brought coolness and refreshment to the plants. The result is a wine with delicate aromas, ripe fruit, and fine acidity. According to wine journalist Luis Gutiérrez (The Wine Advocate), the 2023 Mauro Godello is "ripe without being overdone, with attractive fruit and refined tannins." The wine received 93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, confirming the high quality and consistency of this cuvée.
fermentation, maturation and production
The 2023 Mauro Godello is fully fermented and aged in oak barrels. Fermentation took place in 500-liter barrels, after which the wine rested for ten months on the fine lees for added depth and complexity. This maturation gives the wine a soft, creamy texture without losing its freshness. Total production is limited to 15,000 bottles. Bottling took place in July 2024. The alcohol content is 14 percent, but thanks to the low pH of 3.1, the wine remains remarkably vibrant and refined. It is precisely this balance of richness and freshness that distinguishes Mauro's style. The García family themselves call it a wine that allows the Atlantic influence of Bierzo to shine through within the strength of Castilla y León.
color, smell and taste of 2023 Mauro Godello
The wine has a radiant golden yellow color with subtle green reflections. On the nose, it reveals aromas of ripe yellow fruit such as peach, apricot, and quince, complemented by fennel, almond, and a light spice. The aroma is expressive and pure, with hints of wet stone and a salty undertone. On the palate, the wine combines a full structure with a lively freshness. The texture is creamy, carried by fine bitters and an almost salty finish. Despite its relatively high alcohol content, the balance remains, with a long, refined finish. This wine develops beautifully in the glass and will develop additional depth over time. According to The Wine Advocate, the best drinking season is between 2025 and 2031, but the wine is already delightfully accessible.
serving tips and storage potential
Serve Mauro Godello at 10 to 12 degrees Celsius in a large white wine glass. A brief twenty-minute aeration will open up the wine and soften its texture. This vintage combines immediate charm with ageing potential. After several years in the bottle, notes of honey blossom, almond, and subtle spice emerge, without losing any of its freshness. For lovers of white wines with structure and tension, this is an ideal choice for cellaring.

2025 - 2031
The 2023 Godello has a golden color and a ripe nose of yellow fruit. Despite the ripeness (it's 14% alcohol), the vineyards in Bierzo—on sandy, decompose slate and alluvial stones—provided a more Atlantic profile and a sapid, almost saline twist in the wine, keeping good freshness reflected by a pH of 3.1. It fermented and matured in barrel with the fine lees for 10 months. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2024.
The García family has 90 hectares of vineyards with an average age of 35 years in Tudela de Duero and Traspinedo. They produce 350,000 bottles. In 2022, they got low yields because of the heat and drought, but some rain at the end of the season balanced things; as a result, the wines have precision, freshness and definition. For the Godello, 2023 was warm, and the wine is more opulent and aromatic. 2023 was cooler, but an end of the summer with some high temperatures resulted in an early harvest (they started on August 28). The rain in early September refreshed the plants, and the wines are more delicate and fragrant, ripe without excess and with attractive fruit and fine tannins.

Bodegas Mauro was founded in 1978 by Mariano García, former winemaker from Vega Sicilia. His sons Alberto and Eduardo also work in the company, while cousin Isaac Fernández is the oenologist. The vineyards, in total 60 ha, are located just outside (west) the DO Ribera del Duero. The vineyards are mainly planted with Tempranillo and Syrah. On the spot, a continental climate with an Atlantic influence prevails with no more than 425 liters per m2 of rainfall per year.
The soil contains a lot of lime and is very porous. The vines are 20 years old, in the Cueva Baja vineyard of 3 hectares almost 100 years. Annually, some 210,000 bottles come from the beautiful cellars, which indicates a low average yield per hectare, namely 35 hl. Mauro has 950 225 liter barriques of mainly French oak, 25% of American oak. 20% is renewed annually. Mauro's reputation is enormous, the wines belong to the international top. In 2004 a new Bodega was built just outside the busy town of Tudela de Duero to further increase quality and improve the accessibility of the company.
The winery produces lush, elegant and balanced wines: Mauro, the Mauro VS, the Mauro Terreus and the Mauro Godello. In addition, they also produce the San Roman and the very popular vaue for money wine: the Prima
Since 2004, Eduardo Garcia, son of the legendary winemaker Mariano Garcia, has been in charge. Eduardo is a young talent of Spanish viticulture with an impressive background and reputation in the wine world. His background includes master degrees in viticulture and oenology at the most prestigious schools in Bordeaux and Spain, along with his already great hands-on experience in the vineyards of Bordeaux, Burgundy and California.
