Bodegas Emilio Moro and the introduction of Polvorete

Bodegas Emilio Moro is best known for its iconic Tempranillo wines from Ribera del Duero, but in Bierzo, the family-run winery has been developing a refined range of Godello wines for years. Polvorete was created to showcase the grape in its most youthful and accessible form. The wine embodies pleasure, energy, and simplicity, without sacrificing complexity.

With Polvorete, the winery wanted to demonstrate the versatility and character of Godello. By choosing a style focused on freshness, fruit, and direct charm, this wine has become one of the most beloved white wines in their portfolio. Polvorete is intended as an invitation to get to know the grape better: light, pure, aromatic, and remarkably elegant.

The terroir of Bierzo and the origins of Godello

Located in northwestern Spain, El Bierzo is known for its mountainous location, mineral-rich soils, and wide variations between day and night temperatures. The combination of slate, clay, and sediments gives the wines a subtle tension and a fine mineral undertone. This terroir is ideal for Godello, a grape that thrives on cool slopes with ample sunlight and ventilation.

The Bierzo-Godello style is characterized by pure fruit, floral notes, and a light, elegant structure. Polvorete presents these qualities in an accessible version that emphasizes the purity of the grape.

The 2025 wine year in Bierzo

The 2025 vintage was characterized by a balanced growing season with some warmer periods. The winter was mild and without significant frost, allowing the buds to develop evenly. Spring saw regular and evenly distributed rainfall, ensuring healthy growing conditions and sufficient soil moisture.

The summer was warm and dry, with peak ripening periods in July and August, accelerating ripening. As a result, the harvest was completed slightly earlier than usual. Because the harvest was completely dry, the grapes arrived in excellent condition. The combination of early ripeness, healthy bunches, and aromatic concentration makes 2025 a successful vintage for Polvorete.

The Godello grape in a youthful and expressive style

Godello is known for its refined structure, crisp acidity, and subtle mineral notes. In a light style like Polvorete, the grape primarily reveals its fruity and floral character. Think apple, pear, citrus, and white flowers. The grape also offers a soft mouthfeel that never becomes heavy thanks to its natural freshness.

The 2025 edition is particularly expressive thanks to the combination of early ripeness and healthy grapes. The acidity is lively but never harsh. The wine immediately demonstrates how appealing Godello can be in its purest, most unadulterated form.

Vinification and maturation

Polvorete 2025 was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. This preserves the freshness and aromatic clarity of the aromas. The wine is not aged in oak, allowing the pure fruit to take center stage.

The choice for a reductive, fresh style results in a wine that is light, juicy, and immediately accessible. The acidity is beautifully integrated, giving the wine an energetic character without being harsh.

Color, aroma and taste of Polvorete 2025

The color is bright light yellow with green hues. The aroma reveals notes of green apple, pear, white flowers, and subtle citrus. The nose is open, fruity, and inviting.

On the palate, Polvorete 2025 is fresh, light, and playful. The fruit is prominent, with apple and pear in the foreground, and a lively acidity that gives the wine tension. The texture is soft and round, with a subtle salty edge on the finish. The wine feels airy, elegant, and exceptionally accessible.

Maturation potential

Polvorete 2025 is meant to be enjoyed young and will be at its best within 2-3 years of release. Its fresh acidity and light structure make it a wine meant for immediate enjoyment, while retaining its fruitiness and vibrant style.

For more than 130 years, Emilio Moro has been one of the defining names of Spain's Ribera del Duero wines. Built on generations of vineyard expertise and a deep respect for old vines, the family estate produces elegant, terroir-driven wines that consistently rank among the region's finest expressions of Tinto Fino.

A Family Legacy in Ribera del Duero

The Moro family's connection to viticulture dates back to 1892, when the first generation began cultivating vineyards in Pesquera de Duero, one of the historic villages at the heart of the appellation. Today, the fourth generation continues the family's vision, combining generations of knowledge with modern winemaking while remaining firmly rooted in tradition.

The estate owns approximately 200 hectares of vineyards, many planted with Tinto Fino, the local expression of Tempranillo. Some vineyard parcels are more than 90 years old and continue to produce naturally low yields, resulting in wines with remarkable concentration, depth and elegance. The vineyards lie between 750 and 950 metres above sea level, where warm daytime temperatures and cool nights help preserve freshness, colour and aromatic complexity. These altitude differences are one of the key reasons why the region produces wines with both power and finesse.

Old Vines and the Character of Tinto Fino

Although the Moro family had cultivated vineyards for generations, the first wines under the Emilio Moro label were released in 1987. Since then, the estate has become one of Spain's benchmark wineries, combining meticulous vineyard management with continuous investment in research, sustainability and innovation.

One of the estate's distinguishing features is its careful preservation of historic Tinto Fino plant material. Rather than relying solely on commercial clones, many of today's vineyards originate from selections made from the family's oldest vines. This unique genetic heritage contributes to the consistency, balance and distinctive identity found throughout the portfolio.

Unlike many Spanish producers, Emilio Moro does not place the emphasis on traditional ageing classifications such as Crianza or Reserva. Instead, each wine is named to reflect its vineyard origin or individual personality. From the vibrant Finca Resalso to the flagship bottlings sourced from exceptional old-vine parcels, every wine offers a different expression of the region and showcases the remarkable versatility of Tinto Fino.

International Recognition and the Moro Family Today

Today, Emilio Moro exports its wines to more than 70 countries and is widely regarded as one of Spain's leading wineries. The estate consistently receives outstanding ratings from internationally respected critics including Wine Advocate, James Suckling, Vinous and Wine Spectator. Its reputation for combining traditional vineyard practices with modern winemaking has earned recognition well beyond Spain, making Emilio Moro one of the benchmark producers of Spanish fine wine.

Following the passing of Emilio Moro in 2008, the family continued to build on his vision while remaining committed to the values that made the estate successful. In the same year, the Emilio Moro Foundation was established to support projects that provide access to clean drinking water and improve living conditions in developing communities, reflecting the family's belief that success should also benefit society.
