Kistler Vineyards is a small family winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the very best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in Western Sonoma County.
Named after roasted hazelnuts, this is the most expressive Chardonnay from Kistler Vineyards. Kistler's Chardonnay wines are produced following the French model. The wines are fully fermented in barriques, using both indigenous and cultured yeast strains. After malolactic fermentation, the wines remain on their lees (fine sediment) and are aged in French oak barriques (50% new). After 12-18 months of aging, the wines are bottled without filtration or fining. The Kistler Chardonnay Les Noisetiers is named after roasted hazelnuts; this is the most expressive Chardonnay from Kistler Vineyards. The right balance between citrus fruit and freshness. A lively yet elegant finish. The wine has a beautiful, full color with an intense nose, featuring fresh fruit (pear), hazelnut, vanilla, butter, honey, and other creamy aromas from fermentation and wood aging. Full of structure on the palate, silky smooth on the tongue, rich yet fresh and juicy, with well-integrated oak in the long finish. Certainly do not serve this type of fine wine too chilled. We recommend 12°C.
This powerful wine with ripe aromas calls for similar dishes: pan-fried sole with almonds, Bresse chicken with truffle and foie gras, medium-rare veal kidneys with 'moutarde à l'ancienne' cream sauce, turbot or brill with a creamy butter/white wine sauce, monkfish ham with beurre blanc, lobster with vanilla butter.

Aromas of dried peaches, caramel, honeysuckle, kiwis and lemon curd with hints of flint. Medium- to full-bodied with phenolic tension that tightens the wine in the finish. So long and beautiful. Hints of smoke. Reserved. Give this three or four years to open. Try after 2027.

Kistler’s 2023 Chardonnay Les Noisetiers is rich and creamy in the glass, not to mention quite sophisticated. In this vintage, some of the nutty character (after which the wine is named) is more subtle than in past years. Lemon confit, white flowers and tangerine oil all grace the palate, building into an understated yet beautifully resonant finish. The 2023 is driven by strong citrus and floral inflections rather than the almond/hazelnut profile often found in this bottling.

This is a stellar set of wines from Kistler and winemaker Jason Kesner. What impresses me most, though, is how Kesner has gently moved the wines towards a more contemporary style over the last several vintages without drastically changing the house style.
I first started visiting the winery about 15 years ago. Back then, my tastings were with Steve Kistler, business partner the late Mark Bixler and a timid Jason Kesner in the background. Working with a highly influential and iconic mentor is never easy. It’s something I have a great deal of personal experience with. In those days, Kistler was painfully shy and probably already thinking about his future. Bixler was more open and engaging, but always with a quiet and gentle demeanor. I got to know Kistler better when he took me to see his first vineyard, the site on Moon Mountain known internally as Nelligan Road, on several occasions when I was researching our map. It’s a ranch that holds special significance, as the Kistler family lived on the property and made wine there in the early days. Sadly, those buildings were severely damaged in the 2020 fires. At one point, Kesner told me I had spent more time on that ranch with Kistler than he had. I have no doubt that is true.
Since then, Kesner has gradually shaped the wines into a style that emphasizes a bit more freshness and tension than in the past. He has done that while keeping all the Kistler signatures pretty much in place. That’s a very rare skill. The 2023s, wines from a long, cold growing season, are fabulous. Readers will find Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that capture the purest essence of site, the most important attribute I look for in vineyard-designate wines. The Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard Cuvée Cathleen is without question one of the wines of the vintage.
