Juan Gil, a family business founded in 1916 in the centre of the town of Jumilla, is the champion of putting Jumilia on the map as a (top) wine region and has led several winemakers to stand up for the prestige/potential of the wines of the area and the qualities of the Monastrell grape. True to its origins, this winery has seamlessly fused tradition and the latest technology with respect for the environment. Juan Gill is also the creator of the famous Clio and the world-renowned El Nido.

The Yellow Label by Juan Gil is made from hand-picked Monastrell (Mourvèdre), which after fermentation has matured for 4 months on partly French/partly American oak, after which it is placed back in stainless steel before being bottled. The Yellow Label (this wine was called the 4 Meses until the 2017 vintage) has an intense deep cherry color. Powerful aroma, attractive fruit aromas that remain beautifully balanced in the long aftertaste. Delicious glass! A bull's eye for a good barbecue, dinner or by the fire. The Yellow Label is now perfectly ready to drink and has a great price-quality ratio.

The Juan Gil Yellow Label is a powerful and warm red wine with ripe black fruit such as blackberries and plums, supported by hints of spices, cocoa, vanilla and a firm structure with soft tannins. The wine matures partly in wood, which gives it complexity and roundness. Due to its full body and ripe style, it goes well with savoury, spicy and lightly smoked dishes, both with meat and roasted vegetables.

1. Grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic
Lamb has a distinct, slightly gamey character that goes perfectly with the spicy and earthy notes of Monastrell. Rosemary and garlic enhance the Mediterranean touch and match the character of the wine.

2. Roasted vegetables from the oven with eggplant, pepper, onion and thyme
Monastrell has a warm, ripe style that pairs well with roasted vegetables. The natural sweetness of peppers and onions, and the earthy notes of eggplant, are beautifully supported by the fruity character of the wine.

3. Grilled burgers with smoked paprika powder and old cheese
The juiciness and spiciness of the burger match the powerful structure of the wine. The smoked paprika and cheese complement the wood influence and spiciness of the wine.

4. Beef stew with tomato, bay leaf and cloves
A slow cooked stew brings out the best in this wine. The wine has enough power to accompany the savoury flavours, while the acidity in the tomato works well with the fresh undertone in the wine.

5. Pasta with chorizo, tomato and black olives
Chorizo adds a spicy, smoky note that perfectly complements the spicy character of the wine. Tomato and olives add depth and savouriness, making it well balanced with the full flavour of Juan Gil.

6. Lentil stew with carrot, celeriac, onion and spices such as cumin and paprika powder
A hearty vegetarian option. The lentil texture and deep earthy flavours combine well with the intensity of the wine, while the spices bridge the Mediterranean character of Monastrell.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio

Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.

Organic/organic viticulture and sustainability are important elements in the vision of the Gil Family. Click here to see a nice video overview: Gil Family Estates - Video
