Description
About the Juan Gil winery and the Jumilla region
Bodegas Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and is run by the fourth generation of the Gil family. The winery is located in Jumilla, a wine region in southeastern Spain known for its warm climate, chalky soils, and ancient vines. Thanks to these conditions, grape varieties like Monastrell (Mourvedre in French) and Cabernet Sauvignon thrive here. Juan Gil focuses primarily on characterful red wines with high concentration and structure, where tradition and modern techniques go hand in hand.
The climate, soil and location of the vineyards
Juan Gil's vineyards are situated at high altitude in a dry, Mediterranean climate with continental influences. The soils are nutrient-poor, limestone-rich, and stony. These conditions force the vines to root deeply, resulting in low yields but high-quality grapes. The lack of irrigation allows the grapes to develop intense flavor and natural concentration, balanced by a pleasant acidity.
A new interpretation: Juan Gil Blue Label Cuvée À
The 2023 Juan Gil Blue Label Cuvée À is blended from two perfectly complementary grape varieties. The base is formed by old organic bush vines from Monastrell , planted on chalky and stony soils. These vines are deeply rooted and yield grapes with strength and aromatic intensity. Cabernet Sauvignon , grown in equally challenging vineyards, adds structure, dark fruit notes, and complexity. This combination of indigenous and international grapes creates a wine with both Mediterranean warmth and international refinement.
Vinification and maturation
The vinification of the 2023 Cuvée À focuses on authenticity and complexity. After careful hand-harvesting, the grapes are fermented and the wine is aged for 18 months. Approximately 60% is aged in 500- and 600-liter French oak barrels, which gives the wine elegant wood, subtle spice, and a velvety texture. The remaining 40% is aged in terracotta amphorae. This traditional process gives the wine a distinctive minerality and preserves the pure expression of the fruit. The result is a unique balance of power, freshness, and earthy depth.
What effect do terracotta amphorae have on wine?
The use of terracotta amphorae allows for a subtle exchange of oxygen without the influence of woody flavors. This preserves the wine's purity and develops a certain minerality and earthiness. Compared to the classic Blue Label, which is aged entirely in oak, the Cuvée À offers a more elegant structure and additional layers of aroma and flavor, with a refined, understated style.
Tasting Notes 2023 Juan Gil Blue Label Cuvée À
In the glass, the wine displays a deep cherry red color with purple hues. The nose opens with ripe red fruit such as blackberries, plums, and black cherries. This is complemented by spicy notes of black pepper and dried Mediterranean herbs. Barrel aging brings delicate hints of vanilla and cocoa, while amphora aging adds subtle earthy and mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine is powerful and structured, with firm yet perfectly integrated tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, full of fruity intensity and spicy elegance. The whole exudes Mediterranean warmth and refinement.

They produced a new Monastrell, the 2022 Blue Label Cuvée A, a cuvée amphora, which is different from the regular Blue Label. With this wine, they are looking for less impact of the oak, using less toast, larger barrels and 50% in tinaja, with an élevage of 18 months. It has a different aromatic profile, much more fruit-driven, clean and pure. It's not shy at 15% alcohol, with a pH of 3.6 and 5.6 grams of acidity. It still has some tannin and is quite young but harmonious. They had the idea to test Clayver amphorae and larger barrels for this wine. 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.
From the 2023 harvest, all the vineyards from Juan Gil, some 900 hectares (!), are certified organic, and the wines too. There's a clear focus on sustainability here, way beyond cultivating organically, using solar power, recycling residues and generating their own compost, etc. They now produce around three million bottles, but 2022 and 2023 have seen low yields because of the extreme heat and drought. The two vintages are different, despite being warm and dry. In 2022, they had lots of rain in March, which provided the plants with good reserves; and there was also some rain in late September/early October, so they could harvest the old vines into late October. In 2023, it was a lot more complicated, and they only harvested 25% of what they normally do; so, the 2023 wines are a lot more powerful, concentrated and muscular.

The 2022 Monastrell Blue Label Cuvée A, from Jumilla, was aged 50% in barrels and 50% in amphorae. Purple in hue, it offers cherry aromas with hints of dust and balsamic notes, along with a subtle oak influence. Dry and agile, flavors of thyme and sour cherry create an enticing palate. This is a well-calibrated wine with multiple layers and potential for improvement.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio
Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.
Organic/organic viticulture and sustainability are important elements in the vision of the Gil Family. Click here to see a nice video overview: Gil Family Estates - Video
