Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso boasts a perfect location, with its vineyards nestled on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary, the Rio dos Patos, or "River of the Ducks." The ducks on the labels are a trademark. It's the perfect setting for ripening the grapes, and few vineyards have this luxury. This partly explains why this winery can produce such fine wines, as there is never a water deficit. Besides having ample water, this region is unique in the Alentejo in having oceanic influence, which ensures healthy ripening.
The Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Tinto (Barrique Select) is a blend of Tempranillo (Aragonez), Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet, and Alfrocheiro, making it quintessentially Portuguese. The grapes were hand-harvested and transported to the winery for fermentation and maceration in temperature-controlled stainless steel for 21 days. The wine was then aged for 12 months in 500-liter oak barrels. It is a very full-bodied red wine with an intense red color. The nose is complex with aromas of blackcurrant, jam, and chocolate. It has a very pleasant and long finish. The Sobroso Reserva is a wonderful wine to pair with spicy dishes such as lamb, pork belly, stews, and mature cheeses.
Fun fact : Aragonez is what the Portuguese from the Alentejo province call Spain's national blue grape, Tempranillo. So, it's originally a Spanish grape. A reliable, early-ripening grape, hence the term "Temprano," which means "early."
FACT: In the "Attachments" tab, you'll find the official fact sheet for this fine wine. We'll automatically send it to you when you order it. The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you pick it up, you'll often receive a nice discount . You'll see your discount immediately when you select "Pick up" at checkout. We're located in Dordrecht, just off the A16 motorway, with ample parking. Click here for our address.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.
Herdade do Sobroso as an experience
Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
