Description
Herdade do Sobroso winery in the Alentejo region
Herdade do Sobroso is a renowned winery in the Portuguese region of Alentejo, located in Vidigueira. The estate is located in a unique natural environment with the influence of the Guadiana River. The winery combines traditional wine growing with modern techniques and is known for its elegant, characterful wines. The combination of warm Mediterranean climate, altitude differences and diverse soils contributes to the expressive style of the wines.
Climate and terroir of Vidigueira
Vidigueira, a sub-region in Alentejo, has a warm and dry climate with a cooling influence from the Atlantic Ocean. This ensures optimal ripening of the grapes while maintaining freshness. The soil in the vineyards of Herdade do Sobroso consists mainly of a mixture of loam and clay (franco-argiloso), which contributes to the structure and complexity of the wines.
Grape varieties and vinification of the AnAs Branco 2024
The 2024 AnAs Branco is a blend of three classic Portuguese grape varieties: Antão Vaz, Verdelho and Arinto. Each of these varieties adds a unique element to the flavour profile. Antão Vaz is known for its tropical aromas and structure, Verdelho for its spiciness and fruitiness, and Arinto for its lively acidity and freshness.
The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure the quality of the fruit. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature and lasts for approximately 30 days. After fermentation, a short period of bâtonnage follows, during which the wine rests on the fine lees for added complexity and roundness in the mouth.
Color, aroma and taste of this white Alentejo wine
The AnAs Branco 2024 presents itself clear and light yellow in the glass. The bouquet is fresh, intense and elegant with aromas of citrus, white flowers and subtle tropical notes. In the mouth the wine is lively and refined with a fresh acidity (5.2 g/l), a silky texture and a nice balance between fruit and mineral accents. The wine has an alcohol percentage of 12.5% and is almost dry with only 0.3 grams of residual sugar per liter.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.

Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
