Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary Rio dos Patos or the river of the ducks. The trademark is therefore the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for ripening the grapes and only a few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very fine wines because there is never a water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo that has the influence of the ocean that ensures healthy ripening.

The Herdade do Sobroso Reserva Tinto (Barrique Select) is a blend of Tempranillo (Aragonez), Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Alfrocheiro, so it is Portuguese through and through. The grapes were picked by hand and transported to the winery for fermentation maceration in stainless steel (temperature controlled) for 21 days. The wine then matured for 12 months in 500 liter oak barrels. It is a very full red wine, intense red in color. In the nose it is a complex wine with aromas of blackcurrants, jam and chocolate. Very nice and long aftertaste. The Sobroso Reserva is a beautiful wine with spicy dishes such as lamb, pork belly, stews and mature cheeses.

Did you know : Aragonez, that is what the Portuguese from the province of Alentejo call the national blue grape of Spain, the Tempranillo. Originally a Spanish grape. A reliable grape that ripens early, hence the term 'Temprano', which means 'early'.

WINE-FOOD SUGGESTIONS

  • Grilled ribeye with rosemary and garlic
The full body and ripe tannins of this Portuguese red wine perfectly match the juiciness and fat content of ribeye, while the spiciness of rosemary complements the wine beautifully.

  • Beef stew with carrot and onion
The rich structure of the wine supports the deep flavours of stewed meat and vegetables, with the soft tannins providing balance.

  • Roasted peppers stuffed with minced meat and rice
The savoury filling and sweet character of roasted peppers combine well with the ripe fruit and spicy notes in the wine.

  • Oven-baked leg of lamb with Provencal herbs
The full character and spiciness of the wine match the rich taste of roasted lamb and the Mediterranean herbs.

  • Mushroom risotto with parmesan cheese
The earthy notes of mushrooms and the creaminess of the risotto find a nice balance with the fruity and slightly spicy style of the wine.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.

Herdade do Sobroso history & location

Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.

The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.

Which grape varieties grow here?

Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.

Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso

One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.

A few fun facts

  • The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
  • There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
  • The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.

Herdade do Sobroso as an experience

Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
