history of Domaine Henri Boillot and the philosophy of the house

Domaine Henri Boillot has been an established name in Burgundy for decades and is best known for its expressive and pure wines from the Côte de Beaune. The estate is located in Meursault and is managed by Henri Boillot, who, together with his son, produces white and red Burgundies. Henri focuses on the white wines, his son on the reds. Their shared vision revolves around terroir expression, understated vinification and extreme precision, in which they always strive for finesse, balance and clarity.

location and terroir of Meursault

The grapes for this Meursault come from several high-quality lieux-dits within the appellation, including parcels such as Tillets, Chevalières and Narvaux. The vineyards are situated on west- and southwest-facing slopes with limestone-rich soils, often interspersed with clay. The cooler microclimate and high planting density contribute to concentrated yields and slow ripening. This produces a wine that offers both tension and ripeness – a signature combination of classic Meursault.

vinification and wood maturation of the 2023 Meursault

The 2023 Meursault is vinified from 100% Chardonnay. The harvest is entirely manual, with a careful selection of grapes upon arrival in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, of which a small percentage is new wood, usually no more than 20%. The wine is then aged for about ten months on the fine lees. This method guarantees a subtle balance between wood influence and grape-specific aromas. The maturation adds structure and complexity, without masking the finesse and minerality of the wine.

characteristics of the 2023 harvest year

2023 is characterized as a vintage with beautiful balance and expressive, lively white wines. The conditions were favorable: a relatively cool spring, followed by a warm and dry summer. Thanks to some welcome rain showers in August, the acids were well preserved, and the grapes were picked perfectly ripe. The 2023 Meursault is therefore a wine that already shows a lot, but can also age excellently.

aroma, colour and taste of the 2023 Henri Boillot Meursault

The colour is bright golden yellow with a fine sheen. The nose reveals aromas of ripe citrus fruits, white peach, roasted hazelnuts and a hint of wet stone. Subtle accents of butter, flowers and lime leaf give the wine extra layers. In the mouth the wine shows tension, with a precise acidity, a creamy but tight texture and a mineral undertone that lingers. The finish is refined, clean and persistent.

storage potential and serving tips

This wine is already elegant in its youth, but can easily mature for another five to eight years. Serve the wine at around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius, possibly with half an hour of aeration in the glass to fully express the aromatic complexity. The combination of freshness, mouthfeel and length makes this Meursault suitable for both contemplative moments and gastronomic applications.

History of Henri Boillot

The history of Domaine Henri Boillot dates back to the end of the 19th century. It was originally founded by Henri Boillot's grandfather, Henri Boillot Sr., who began acquiring vineyards in some of Burgundy's most prestigious appellations. The wine tradition of the domain has been passed on from generation to generation. Henri Boillot Sr. was succeeded by his son, Henri Boillot Jr., and later by Henri Boillot III. Each generation continued to expand the family's vineyard holdings and refine its winemaking techniques.

Production by Henri Boillot

Henri Boillot owns and manages vineyards spread over approximately 19 hectares (about 47 acres) in Burgundy. Henri Boillot's portfolio typically includes wines made from Chardonnay (white) and Pinot Noir (red), the main grape varieties in Burgundy. One of the notable aspects of Henri Boillot's winemaking philosophy is his commitment to minimal intervention in the winemaking process. He believes that the grapes and the unique characteristics of each vineyard come into their own in the final wine. This approach often involves the use of natural yeasts and minimal use of new oak barrels to ensure that the wines reflect the true essence of the terroir. Henri Boillot is an advocate of sustainable and organic agricultural practices in the vineyards. He believes in minimal intervention in the winemaking process so that the grapes can fully express their origins and character. The estate is particularly highly regarded for its white wines made from Chardonnay grapes, including Premier and Grand Cru bottlings from renowned appellations such as Puligny-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet, Le Montrachet and Meursault.
