More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Margaux is dominated by deep gravel soils that ensure drainage and aromatic precision. Château Kirwan's vineyards are situated on slightly undulating plots with a high proportion of gravel interspersed with clay. The 2023 vintage benefited from sufficient ripeness and retained freshness, resulting in a wine with concentration and a distinctly classic profile.
Vineyards
Kirwan's plots are individually monitored and harvested. Low yields and careful selection produce grapes with intensity and purity. The combination of soils contributes to both structure and aromatic finesse, essential to the Margaux style.
Grape varieties and composition
The 2023 blend consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, and 1% Carmenère. Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone and structure, Merlot adds roundness, while the smaller components provide spice, tension, and added depth.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness. Vinification focuses on controlled extraction to maintain precision and balance. Maturation in oak barrels enhances the wine's structure and texture without overpowering its fruit expression.
Color, smell and taste
The 2023 Château Kirwan displays a deep ruby red color. The nose opens with aromas of dark cherry, plum, and cassis, complemented by notes of licorice, menthol, spices, and lavender. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a dense yet refined structure. The fruit is juicy and concentrated, supported by fresh acidity and finely honed tannins. Despite its intensity, the wine remains well-proportioned and elegant, with a long, resonant finish.
Development and drinking window
Ratings for this vintage range from 92–94 points to 94 points. The wine already combines charm with clear structure and has the potential to develop over time. Expect optimal drinking from around 2031, with potential well beyond 2050.
Summary of professional reviews
Antonio Galloni of Vinous rated the wine 92–94 points, praising its density, balance, and intensity, highlighting the dark fruit, spice, and perfect proportions. Zekun Shuai of James Suckling awarded it 94 points, praising the fresh cassis, mineral notes, chalky texture, and long, linear finish. Both reviewers emphasized the aging potential and refined style of this Margaux.

Solid, showing fine spices, white pepper and a touch of minerals to the fresh cassis and berries. Cohesive and almost chalky, with medium body and a long, linear finish. Juicy, precise and pristine. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 23% merlot, 5% cabernet franc, 6% petit verdot and 1% carmenere. Will age well in the next 10 to 15 years. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Kirwan is dense, resonant and impeccably balanced. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol, spice and lavender are all dialed up in this decidedly intense Margaux. Kirwan packs quite the punch, but it is also neatly proportioned, not to mention incredibly delicious.

Chateau Kirwan has belonged since 1925 to the Schÿler family, a négociants family from Bordeaux. The vineyard of 37 hectares is divided into two parts, 2/3 is a ridge of stones around the castle in Cantenac, where the Cabernet is planted. 1/3 contains more clay west of the appellation, where the Merlot is planted. The family has made huge investments to bring the cru to a very high level in terms of quality. Today it is Philippe Delfaut who vinifies and gives more and more refinement and elegance.
