Château Chasse-Spleen is one of the top houses in Moulis-en-Médoc. It is not a Grand Cru Classé, but it is not inferior in quality and even regularly performs better. For a long time, Chasse-Spleen had the 'Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel' status, but in 2003 the château itself left the rankings. “I have reservations about the principle of a hierarchy. There will always be the disgruntled few that will not accept being left out. There will always be legal proceedings. Consumers want stability, not court cases,” says Jean-Pierre Foubet, managing director of Château Chasse-Spleen.
Château Chasse-Spleen, together with Château Poujeaux, is the most important winery in Moulis. Although it is classified as Cru Bourgeois Exceptionelle, the wine surpasses many Medoc wines from the Grand Cru Classé. Chasse-Spleen has always produced good wines, but the quality improved greatly after the takeover in 1976 by the Taillan group, who also manage Château Haut-Bages-Libéral. The château was run by Bernadette Villars until she and her husband died in an accident in 1992 while hiking in the Pyrenees. The company is now owned by daughter Claire.
The Chasse-Spleen has a very elegant bouquet with neatly integrated oak, the terroir is really visible here. The nose shows red fruit, cedar wood and smoky notes. In the mouth it has excellent acidity that delivers extraordinary tension, the tannins are firm but fine. The 2020 Château Chasse-Spleen Moulis-en-Médoc is a blend of 57% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 10% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc. The Chasse Spleen 2023 is one of the most beautiful vintages with an exceptionally good price/quality ratio.

Offering up aromas of minty cassis, dark berries and pencil shavings, the 2023 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and youthfully structured, with good depth at the core and a penetrating finish. It's a strong effort.

This is structured and a little tight, with good concentration and volume. It’s medium-bodied with juicy and vibrant fruit coming through. Velvety tannins. Firm and fresh at the end.

From: The Dalmatian Vintage: Bordeaux 2023 (Apr 2024)
The 2023 Chasse-Spleen takes time to open on the nose, gradually revealing raspberry and blackcurrant scents, touches of rose petals and freshly rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, adequate freshness and a marine-tinged finish—almost Pauillac-like in style. This is quite a stylish if almost “old-school" Chasse-Spleen that should develop well in bottle.

Chasse-Spleen is the star of the municipality of Moulis next to Château Poujeaux. Already since the early 1800's when during a visit by Lord Byron in 1821 he spoke the memorable words: "Quel remède pour chasser le spleen", and in Dutch "what a remedy to cleanse the spleen" to which the Château is said to be name derives, Chasse-Spleen is an exceptionally good wine.
