Château Chasse-Spleen is one of the top estates in Moulis-en-Médoc. It's not a Grand Cru Classé, but it's just as good in terms of quality and even regularly performs better. Chasse-Spleen held 'Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel' status for a long time, but in 2003 the château itself withdrew from the classification. "I have reservations about the principle of hierarchy. There will always be the disgruntled few who will not accept being left out. There will always be legal proceedings. Consumers want stability, not court cases," says Jean-Pierre Foubet, managing director of Château Chasse-Spleen. Château Chasse-Spleen is part of the Taillan Group, which manages around twenty châteaux in Bordeaux. The company was founded by Jacques Merlaut, Céline Villars' grandfather. It is Céline who now runs the château, together with her husband, Jean-Pierre Foubet.

A classic from a woman's hand! The white Château Chasse-Spleen is truly exceptional, a classic among white Bordeaux wines. Founded in 1822, Château Chasse-Spleen primarily produces red wines, but on a small 1.8-hectare plot, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon are cultivated for the production of white Bordeaux. The Blanc de Chasse-Spleen has a beautiful pale yellow color with a fresh nose of citrus, melon, grapefruit, and citrus blossom. The wine has a lovely soft attack, impressions of ripe white fruit, passion fruit, and mango, along with well-balanced oak. Fresh, rich, and aromatic. The wine is a blend of approximately 65% Sémillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc, and has a drinking window of at least 10 years.

Chasse-Spleen is the star of the municipality of Moulis next to Château Poujeaux. Already since the early 1800's when during a visit by Lord Byron in 1821 he spoke the memorable words: "Quel remède pour chasser le spleen", and in Dutch "what a remedy to cleanse the spleen" to which the Château is said to be name derives, Chasse-Spleen is an exceptionally good wine.

Château Chasse-Spleen is, together with Château Poujeaux, the most important winery in Moulis. Although classified as Cru Bourgeois, the wine surpasses many Grand Cru Classé Medoc wines. Chasse-Spleen has always produced good wines, but the quality has greatly improved after the takeover in 1976 by the Taillan group, who also manage Château Haut-Bages-Libéral. The château was run by Bernadette Villars until she and her husband were killed in a hike in the Pyrenees in 1992. The company is now owned by daughter Claire.
