Château Beychevelle 2023

Blend

  • Cabernet Sauvignon : Bud break on April 1, flowering on May 25, véraison (first berries) on July 20, harvest from September 20 to October 6.
  • Merlot : Bud break on March 25, flowering on May 20, veraison on July 11, harvest from September 13 to 25.

Harvest 2023

Spring began with a frost on April 5th, which, thanks to our constant vigilance, had no impact on the Château Beychevelle vineyard. Warm, dry weather followed, which favored an early harvest. A relatively wet summer, punctuated by stormy periods, could have favored the development of powdery mildew. However, thanks to good plant health management and the dedication of our teams, we were able to prevent this and preserve the quality of the harvest. September was exceptionally warm and sunny, with a late heatwave and average temperatures 4 degrees above seasonal norms. This will be a crucial factor for this vintage.

Starting on September 13th, we enjoyed a bountiful harvest. This was the longest harvest in Château Beychevelle's history, with 17 days of picking spread over four weeks. Thanks to the excellent health of the grapes, we were able to take breaks on rainy or hot days. Our emblematic grape varieties have reached excellent ripeness and are at their best.

Terroir

The strength of Château Beychevelle lies in its terroir, which consists of two deep, well-drained gravel hills near the Gironde estuary. This offers a unique microclimate, providing protection from the climatic events of 2023.

Tasting notes of the Château Beychevelle 2023

Château Beychevelle 2023 has a generous texture on the palate, with an exceptional concentration of red and black fruit and hints of spice. The wine is distinguished once again by its finesse and elegance. It has a silky texture on the palate, with mild tannins and a velvety feel.

  • Colour : Deep and lush purple, announcing the great intensity of the wine.
  • Nose : Black fruit aromas such as blackberries and black cherries, interwoven with soft woody notes and light smoky scents. Floral notes of violets add an extra dimension.
  • Palate : The attack is lively and fresh, with a generous fruitiness harmonizing with woody vanilla nuances. The texture is remarkably fine and delicately caresses the palate. The varietal character is expressed through assertive tannins that extend the finish, providing strength, density, and tension. A slight acidity adds length to this harmonious balance.

Vineyard and Vinification

Château Beychevelle has 250 hectares of land, of which approximately 90 hectares are planted with vines. The remainder consists of grassland where Limousin cattle graze and woodlands of poplars, ash trees, and walnut trees. The vines are on average 30 years old and densely planted, with densities ranging from 8,300 to 10,000 vines per hectare. They have developed substantial root systems, allowing them to draw nutrients from deep within the soil and withstand sometimes challenging weather conditions, such as summer drought. The vineyard is planted with the three traditional grape varieties of the Médoc: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.

Château Beychevelle has always carefully preserved its environment and terroir. This commitment is embodied daily through our ISO 14001 certification and sustainable farming practices. Our new, modern winery, tailor-made for the vineyard, offers plot-by-plot vinification that allows each terroir to express its full complexity and depth. Innovation and tradition are combined in the winery, a perfect reflection of Château Beychevelle's haute couture expertise.

Timeless elegance of Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle stands as a symbol of tradition and innovation in the heart of Bordeaux, France. This iconic winery, nestled along the serene banks of the Gironde, offers an unparalleled combination of history, culture, and viticultural excellence. Discover the deep roots and flourishing future of this majestic estate.

Château Beychevelle, also known as the 'Versailles of Bordeaux,' has a rich history dating back to 1565, when it was founded by Bishop François of Foix-Candale. Throughout the centuries, the château has had a series of illustrious owners, including the first Duke of Épernon, Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette. His influence was so significant that passing ships would lower their sails as a sign of respect, which led to the name Beychevelle, derived from 'Bêcha vêla,' meaning 'lower the sails' in Gascon.

Innovation and sustainability

Château Beychevelle embraces modern techniques while respecting its historical roots. Recent investments have resulted in advanced facilities such as the new cellar opened in 2016. This space utilizes gravity to minimize stress on the wine and allows for plot-by-plot vinification, enabling each grape variety to fully realize its potential. Moreover, the château emphasizes sustainability with an ISO 14001 certification, indicating a serious commitment to environmental awareness.

Men and women of influence

Over the centuries, Château Beychevelle has benefited not only from 'men of power' but also from 'women of taste' who have each made unique contributions to the development of the estate. Figures such as Marie-Amélie Kohn, Madame Guestier, and Madame Heine have shaped the decorative style, hospitality, and beautiful gardens of the château.

The desire to host guests in a beautiful, refined setting is a long-standing tradition at Château Beychevelle. From the enchanting gardens adorned with statues and exotic birds to the modern reception halls, every corner of the château is designed to amaze and welcome visitors. This pursuit of beauty has also been recognized by wine connoisseur Robert Parker, who noted that "the wines of Beychevelle can be as beautiful as its magnificent gardens."

Art & Château Beychevelle

Château Beychevelle has always had a passion for the arts. The château has welcomed artists such as Molière and his troupe of actors, and continues to be a centre for creative expression through the Beychevelle Foundation and partnerships with arts organizations. The château attracts between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors annually and remains a source of inspiration for many.
