Description
Château Beychevelle is located at the beginning of the commune of the same name and is the first château you see when you drive into the commune. The castle is magnificent, and was once called the "Versailles du Médoc". In Saint Julien, Beychevelle lived a high-ranking admiral. All ships entering the Gironde had to salute, and did so by lowering their sails "baisser les Voiles". The name "Beychevelle" is said to be derived from this. Since 2011, the castle has changed owners. It is now in the hands of Pierre Castel (of the well-known négociant trader in Bordeaux and elsewhere in France) and of the Japanese group Suntory (also owner of Ch. Lagrange).
Château Beychevelle has the elegance and finesse of the best terroirs of Saint Julien. Graceful and complex, with an enormous aromatic richness, Château Beychevelle is made from the best plots in the undergoes a rigorous selection process and reveals its true nature after about ten years and can be kept for decades, depending on the vintage.
Château Beychevelle had to deal with some frost and a bit of hail this year. Yields were still reasonable with 36 hl/ha this year at Beychevelle. “Our Cabernet is exceptional, but I do think this is the best Merlot we have ever made”, according to technical director Romain Duclomb. The Château Beychevelle Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, The Château Beychevelle has a bright red/purple color in the glass. It is a generous wine that is surprisingly accessible even at this early stage. The nose offers seductive notes of blackberries, black cherries and dark chocolate. It is an exceptionally harmonious wine. It is both powerful and silky; fresh, fruity and long in the mouth. A fine expression of a Grand Terroir with good freshness and a very pleasant mouthfeel.

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and cassis mingled with hints of violets and licorice, framed by creamy new oak, the 2022 Beychevelle is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit framed by rich, unusually suave and polished tannins in the context of recent vintages at this address. It's a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot, with a pH of 3.85, quite typical for this address.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Beychevelle was picked between 12-29 September at 36hL/ha, matured in 70% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and touches of cassis and violet. Not as ostentatious as some other Saint-Julien wines at this early stage, but delineated, and it positively brims with energy. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit framed by beautifully-sculpted tannins. The 2022 is very harmonious, satin-like in texture, and gently fans out toward the finish. It ends up being one of the most seductive Beychevelles I have tasted from barrel, one not to be overlooked. Chapeau, Mr. White! 14.08% alcohol.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Beychevelle is fabulous. In most recent vintages Beychevelle has been a flamboyant, extravagant Saint-Julien, but in 2022 is its surprisingly vibrant and fresh, almost shockingly so. Ripe red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, rose petal and spice are all beautifully delineated. More than anything, I admire the wine’s freshness and drive, qualities that have not often been present in recent vintages. That makes the 2022 one of my favorite recent vintages here. Tasted three times.
