Château Beauregard - Pomerol - France
Located in the heart of Pomerol, Château Beauregard produces certified organic wines. The climate plays a crucial role in the development of their wines. The autumn of 2023 was particularly warm with temperatures 1.8 to 3.9°C above average. Winter had normal temperatures, except for February, which was colder. The total precipitation during this winter was 434 mm, which corresponds to the average of 432 mm. The autumn and winter were alternately dry and wet, with shortages in October, December and February, and surpluses in November and March.
Harvest of 2023
Spring brought persistently high temperatures, peaking more than 2°C above average in June. These exceptionally warm and humid conditions in May and June required extra attention and protection of the vineyards. The young grape bunches and foliage developed quickly in these warm conditions, with temperatures up to 31°C. By June 25, many bunches had already reached the "closing" stage.
After the thunderstorms in June, the drought continued into July. Thunderstorms in August eased the effects of the drought, while mild temperatures continued and increased sharply in August and September, making September 2023 one of the warmest months on record.
The vineyards of Château Beauregard cover 17.5 hectares with vines averaging 30 years of age, located on clay-gravel soils on the south-eastern edge of the famous Pomerol plateau. The yield is 43 hl/ha. The blend of their wine consists of 74% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, with an alcohol content of 13.5% and a pH value of 3.8.
Vinification
The harvest takes place manually between September 6 and 27, 2023, per plot. The grapes are carefully sorted, cooled to 6°C and then taken to the gravity wine cellar in small containers of 3 hl. Here they are further processed in 22 thermally controlled, concrete conical barrels for individual plot-by-plot vinification. The cold prementation maceration is followed by alcoholic fermentation, regulated between 26°C and 28°C depending on the potential of the tanks and the desired tannin extraction. The skin maceration lasts between 3 and 4 weeks, after which the malolactic fermentation takes place in new barrels for the best tanks.
The wine is then aged for 18 months, with 40% aged in new French oak barrels from five different cooperages. The result is a wine of exceptional purity, with precise aromatics, depth and refined tannins. According to Guillaume Fredoux, the technical director, the 2023 harvest year, despite the extreme weather conditions, led to an exceptional harvest, both in quantity and quality, thanks to the tireless efforts of the entire team.
'Medium body, very fine tannins and a racy, bright finish. The tannins are so refined and polished. 74% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 6% cabernet sauvignon. From organically grown grapes.' -James Suckling

Wijnhuis
In 2014, the Moulin and Cathiard families purchased Château Beauregard and set about making sweeping changes. They also acquired the historical wine estates of Château Pavillon Beauregard in Lalande de Pomerol, Château Bastor Lamontagne in Sauternes and Château Saint Robert in the Graves.
At Beauregard, the classic architecture of the site has remained intact. The two centuries-old chartreuse has been totally refurbished and now includes 5 luxury bedrooms which look out over the grounds and the vineyard. A new vat cellar was created adjacent to the existing barrel cellar, which itself has been completely redesigned. Two new reception areas have been created to welcome customers.
THE TERROIR
Château Beauregard, one of the first estates in the region to expand its vineyard in the 18th century, possesses exceptional terroir. Its position on the south-east edge of the famous Pomerol plateau enables the property to grow vines on fascinating, precious land. This mainly gravelly soil, in which clay and sand make up the other soil types, produces elegant, flavorsome, fresh and characterful Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its vineyard stretches over 17.5 hectares (43 acres) where over 35 plots are grown and tended on an individualized basis according to their specificities.
An intra-plot mapping has been done over the whole of the estate in order to identify as closely as possible the subtle physico-chemical differences in our soils. This unique, precious soil must be protected and respected, and everything is done to favor its biology and its natural functioning. The reasoned use of different seeds enables the creation of biological diversity favoring life in the soil. The maintaining of trees and bushes on the estate attracts an auxiliary fauna which is very useful in the fight against certain vine pests. The whole of the estate is grown organically.
VINIFICATION
The harvesting and vinification at Château Beauregard are carried out with even greater precision today, thanks in particular to a new high-performing vat cellar. Manual harvesting ensures that optimal phenolic ripening is respected on a plot by plot basis and even within each plot.
Grape sorting has been fine-tuned with the introduction of a completely new harvest reception line which combines two selective sorting lines, a high-frequency de-stemmer and laser optical sorting. The vats are filled using gravity flow.
Small 3 hectolitre mobile bins are brought to the top of the vats via a lift, and the berries are then tipped into tronco-conical vats made of pure concrete with a temperature-control system integrated in the mass. Vat sizes including small capacities have been calculated to enable intra plot vinifications. The alcoholic fermentation is done at controlled temperatures of between 25° and 30°C depending on each vat’s potential and the desired extraction of tannins. For the best quality batches, the malo-lactic fermentation is carried out in new oak barrels. We choose up to 7 different coopers and age our wines in barrel for 15 to 20 months.
