the history of Almaviva
The Almaviva winery was founded in 1997 through a collaboration between Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, heiress to Bordeaux icon Baron Philippe de Rothschild, and Don Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle of the Chilean wine empire Viña Concha y Toro. Two families with rich histories—Rothschild since 1853 and Concha y Toro since 1883—joined forces to set a new standard for top Chilean wine in Puente Alto, in the Maipo Valley. The idea was clear: combine the strength of Chilean terroir with French elegance and expertise. This resulted in a wine that is now recognized worldwide as a Chilean Grand Cru.
the terroir and climate of Puente Alto
The vineyards are located at the foot of the Andes, in Puente Alto, one of Chile's most famous terroirs. The area benefits from poor, stony soils with excellent drainage, and a climate characterized by warm days and cool nights. These daily temperature fluctuations create a perfect balance between ripeness and freshness in the grapes. Rainfall is scarce, making irrigation necessary, but this allows the team to precisely control the vines' growth. The proximity to the Andes and the altitude also bring additional finesse and tension to the wines.
characteristic grapes and style of Almaviva
Almaviva is always based on a Bordeaux-style blend. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the core, usually supplemented with Carmenère, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. This combination produces a wine with the power and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, the softness and spice of Carmenère, the elegance of Cabernet Franc, and the deep color and added complexity of Petit Verdot. The result is a wine that is simultaneously rich, balanced, and refined, with excellent aging potential.
the 2023 harvest year in detail
The year 2023 was characterized by extreme climatic conditions. The winter was exceptionally dry, with only 119 mm of rain – more than 40% less than the long-term average. A cool September was followed by a warm October and a very dry spring. The summer brought exceptionally high temperatures, with the hottest March ever recorded in Chile. Thanks to careful irrigation and strict selection, the team was able to preserve the freshness. The harvest began early: Merlot from March 9th, Cabernet Sauvignon from March 13th and continued until April 24th in Puente Alto. The Carménère from Peumo was picked between April 25th and May 5th. Despite the challenges, 2023 produced an excellent harvest with high quality and a remarkably good balance between ripeness and freshness.
vinification and maturation
The 2023 Almaviva is blended from 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Carmenère, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. After careful fermentation, it was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 73% of which were new. This approach lends the wine strength, structure, and complexity, while simultaneously maintaining finesse and harmony.
color, aroma and flavor profile of the 2023 Almaviva
The wine reveals itself in the glass as a deep, intense, and opaque ruby red. The bouquet is broad and complex, with aromas of cassis, strawberry, and blackberry, complemented by tobacco, cedar, earth, black olives, and subtle spices. The palate immediately reveals its balance: a full structure with round, polished tannins and refined acidity. The texture is supple and layered, with elegant freshness and a long, harmonious finish. This vintage combines volume and power with precision and elegance, and is an expression of Puente Alto's unique terroir, despite the warm weather of the year.
Why order Almaviva 2023?
The 2023 Almaviva is a wine that effortlessly combines power and elegance. It's a vintage that already impresses not only with its fruity intensity and refined structure, but also with its considerable aging potential. For the serious wine lover and sommelier, this is an essential wine to have in the cellar: a wine that elevates both festive occasions and culinary delights.

The 2023 Almaviva aromatically leads with its Carménère component in this vintage, featuring typical merkén spice notes blended with gravel dust, dried herbs and anise aromas, all set against a bright, red-fruited core. The palate is lush and velvety but supported by a lively, tensile spine, leading to a refined, sturdy finish that emphasizes lush fruit flavors, polished tannins and an oak-derived backdrop. This is a decidedly fruit-driven yet still elegant expression of Almaviva, and its one that will be accessible in its youth as more structured vintages continue to mature in the cellar. This blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot matured for 20 months in 73% new French oak.

A refined wine showing lovely fruit with less verticality than the 2022, but here the magic is the roundness and smoothness, which is really poised. Subtle cedar, tobacco, olives and paprika on the nose. Sweet berries and fruit on the palate, with a medium to full body and a long, nuanced finish. More precise in terms of tannins this year, with immediate approachability. 74% cabernet sauvignon, 19% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. 73% new oak and the rest is second use. Drink from 2026.

From: Maule: The Magic of Old Vines and a Stylistic Reinvention in Chile (Jun 2025)
The 2023 Blend Almaviva is composed of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Sourced from a warm, dry vintage, this reflects the character of the year, though the winery has managed it with notable finesse. The nose delivers aromas of lavender, violet and blood orange, followed by hints of plum, blackberry and soft spices. Generous and juicy on the palate, this offers enveloping volume, fine-grained tannins and a fresh, sustained finish. Exceptionally well-crafted for the vintage, the 2023 once again secures its place among the top wines of Puente Alto.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on June 2025
A joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro, Almaviva debuted in 1996. Located in Puente Alto, the estate focuses on Bordeaux varieties grown in gravelly soils to produce the flagship Almaviva and, since 2018, a second wine—Epu. French oenologist Michel Friou has overseen winemaking since 2007. Between 2020 and 2025, the domaine made a significant investment in vineyard replanting and facility expansion, including a new crushing area and a full-scale visitor center, complete with an underground tunnel connecting the winery to the estate house. The main vineyard changes involved replanting weakened Cabernet Sauvignon and upgrading irrigation systems. The last five years have aligned both vineyard and cellar to ensure a bold, ageworthy house style.

The name Almaviva, although it has a Spanish sonority, belongs to classic French literature: Count Almaviva is the hero of The Marriage of Figaro, the famous play by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later turned into an opera by Mozart's genius . The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile's ancestral history, with 3 reproductions of a stylized design, symbolizing the vision of the earth and cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. The label bears the name Almaviva in Beaumarchais' own handwriting. Two great traditions thus join forces.
The Château concept was introduced to France in the 19th century as a way of honoring the creative mastery of Bordeaux winegrowers. Almaviva was the first wine in Chile to be created according to this French Château concept, taking into account an exceptional terroir, a unique bodega and a technical team dedicated exclusively to the production of wines of unparalleled quality and excellence.
