Description
The third international release of Almaviva's second wine will be the 2021 Epu. This Almaviva is also sold through the Bordeaux négoce where we can fortunately buy directly because the price/quality is excellent from the pig. The EPU is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenere, 5% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc which matures for a year in used barriques. The 2021 is intense and fruity, spicy and spicy, with a creamy texture and fine-grained tannins. It is a second wine, but the Epu is perhaps even a bit more classic and is this more Bordeaux and is the big brother the Almaviva more Chilean. The EPU in its younger years certainly still decant. The wine has been awarded 93/100 points by Tim Atkin and 94/100 by Suckling
“Far more satisfying than plenty of Bordeaux, ” writes Jancis Robinson about this cult project of the (Mouton) Rothschild family and the iconic Concha y Toro.

Wine Advocate gave 94/100 to Epu : “The current release of their second wine is the 2020 Epu. It's selected from the same terroir and vineyard in Puente Alto, one of the most reputed places for Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, but from the younger vines (five- to 20-year-old vines) and harvested a little earlier to preserve acidity and fruit. In the warm and dry 2020 vintage, the wine was produced with a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Carmenere, 5% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, usually higher in Cabernet and lower in Carmenere than Almaviva. It has red ripe berries, the textbook blackberries and cassis and some creamy oak. It's ripe at 14.8% alcohol and has mellow acidity, good freshness and balance, with a pH of 3.71 and 4.8 grams of acidity (tartaric). It matured for 12 months in French barriques, 10% new and 90% second use. The wine has a bright nose with a clean note of baked "morrón" peppers intermixed with red berry compote. It has a velvety plate with the luxurious texture of the modern Bordeaux, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's approachable and round but should reward some time in bottle. This is a pretty serious Epu. 75,000 bottles produced. It was bottled at the end of 2021 and the first days of 2022. This is the second vintage sold through the Place de Bordeaux négociant system”.

2021 EPU

The 2021 Epu is a Bordeaux blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto in the Metropolitan region. It was aged in barrels for a year. Garnet with a purple sheen. The nuanced nose unfolds over an oak bed with ashes, pepper, cassis, and green pepper notes. Indulgent and rich on the palate, the fine-grained tannins and the juicy and overwhelming mouthfeel lead to an ample and flavorful ripe finish. The Chilean Cab style, powerful and bold, guides this red.

The 2019 Bordeaux Blend EPU is a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Carménère, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc from Puente Alto, Maipo, aged for 12 months in French barrels. Vivid purple in color. The intense nose offers blackberry and black currant notes with hints of jam, pepper and balsamic aromas. Indulgent initially with good intensity and fruitiness. The polished Maipo tannins keep it juicy in spite of the 15% alcohol, filling the mouth with flavor.

The first harvest of this joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Concha y Toro was in 1996. Located in Puente Alto, they grow Bordelais varieties in gravel-rich soils to produce Almaviva and, beginning in 2018, a second wine called Epu. Since 2007, the oenologist has been Frenchman Michel Friu.

"Representing just 20% of the total crop in 2021 – 55% went to Almaviva and the rest was sold o in bulk – EPU mostly uses grapes from younger vineyards, but is an impressive second wine in its own right. Featuring Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Carmenère and 5% Merlot, it’s comparatively ripe for a cooler, wetter vintage, yet some way short of being a blockbuster. Chocolate and mocha aromas segue into a palate that’s ripe yet well balanced, with ne-boned tannins, plum, red berry and cassis flavours and stylish 75% new wood. Drink 2025-29"

EPU (Almaviva) 2021 (Maipo Valley; 80% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Carmenere; 5% Merlot; 15% alcohol). e second wine of Almaviva. Lots of vertical lift and energy on the highly expressive nose. A lovely Cabernet leaness and a plump dark berry fruit, with a little hint of cedar and no doubt more to come, a delicate touch of sweet spice, a little roasted espresso bean and a cool stony minerality. Very pure, very so and very elegant with lovely highly refined but still grippy tannins, a gracious evolution over the palate and an impressively long
and gently tapering finish.

The name Almaviva, although it has a Spanish sonority, belongs to classic French literature: Count Almaviva is the hero of The Marriage of Figaro, the famous play by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), later turned into an opera by Mozart's genius . The label, meanwhile, pays homage to Chile's ancestral history, with 3 reproductions of a stylized design, symbolizing the vision of the earth and cosmos in the Mapuche civilization. The label bears the name Almaviva in Beaumarchais' own handwriting. Two great traditions thus join forces.
The Château concept was introduced to France in the 19th century as a way of honoring the creative mastery of Bordeaux winegrowers. Almaviva was the first wine in Chile to be created according to this French Château concept, taking into account an exceptional terroir, a unique bodega and a technical team dedicated exclusively to the production of wines of unparalleled quality and excellence.
