Description
The Raen Lady Marjorie Cuvée Chardonnay is dedicated to Carlo and Dante Mondavi's grandmother, Marjorie. The 2021 is the first release of this chardonnay and is a cuvée from the cellar's finest barrels, sourced from two special sites along the western Sonoma Coast in Fort Ross-Seaview.
Hailing from the most rugged reaches of Sonoma’s west coast, Lady Marjorie is rooted in the rocky soil of Fort Ross-Seaview, yielding a wine of finesse, elegance and verve. Crushed wet gravel, stone fruits of ripe white peach and crisp nectarine give way to delicate notes of honeysuckle, apricot and citrus pith. On the palate, the crushed wet rock lingers with summer-ripe stone fruits and white flowers that take us back to the cool coastline where these vines grow. Subtle notes of this beautiful coastline linger with faint hints of fruit, flowers and minerality, leading to a seamlessly long finish. 99/100 Suckling

Grapes for the 2022 Chardonnay Lady Marjorie were harvested on September 7 and September 8. It’s open on the nose with arresting scents of peach, honey, elderflower and lemongrass. The medium-bodied palate is satiny and expansive, its generous flavors enlivened by vibrant acidity, and it has a long, layered finish. 800 cases produced.

Pears, peaches and hints of honeysuckle. So perfumed with rocky undertones and notes of bananas and flint. Full-bodied with a freshness and depth that is impressive and extremely long and persistent. Flint and lime at the end. Salty and intense. Love to drink it now but needs a few years of bottle age.

The 2022 Chardonnay Lady Marjorie is soft, open-knit and ready to drink. Apricot, tangerine peel and light tropical notes open nicely, framed by a discreet touch of oak that wraps it all together.

This is a superb set of 2022s from brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. Sadly, yields are down a punishing 40-50%, mostly because of frost in May. “We had small clusters and tiny berries with thick skins,” Carlo Mondavi explained. The 2022 Pinots are intense, dark wines. As always, the Pinots are done with 100% whole clusters. In 2022, the interplay of huge fruit with intense stem character makes for wines that are beguiling but also need cellaring to be at their best. Time in barrel remains around ten months. I was also deeply impressed with the Chardonnay from the Martinelli family’s Charles Ranch in Fort Ross-Seaview. It’s one of the best 2022 Chardonnays I have tasted so far.
