Description
A Pinot Noir of exceptionally high class! It is not without reason that this wine received 97 points Suckling - look under the Tab Rating for all ratings. With this Royal St. Robert Cuvee, brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi honor their grandfather Robert Mondavi, who taught them to always strive for perfection. Carlo and Dante founded Raen Winery in 2013 with the goal of producing world-class Pinot Noir on the western hills of the Sonoma coast. And believe us, they have certainly succeeded with this wine.
The wine is made from a selection of the very best barrels, which provide a glimpse of the cool and rugged western hills of the Sonoma Coast in California. The wine has beautiful aromas of freshly cut wild strawberries, rose petals and hibiscus flowers on the nose. The intense flavors of dark cherries, strawberry, white tea, thyme, sweet resin and forest floor give this wine a full, spicy taste. Furthermore, it has a mineral tone (pulverized stone). A medium bodied wine with a long, full finish. 100% Pinot Noir, bottled unfiltered. The wine has matured for 10 months in 60-liter French oak barrels (10% new, 4 years air-dried French oak and 90% neutral French oak barrels). Bottled without filtration. 98/100 Suckling
Excellent wine with beef, veal, game dishes (venison) and poultry.

This is amazing on the nose with dried strawberries, sandalwood, mahogany and tea leaf. Iron and rust underneath the fruit. Dried flowers, nutmeg and rose petals. Full-bodied yet agile and energetic with layers of fine dusty tannins. Entrancing finish. Give this four or five years in the bottle, but it’s hard not to drink.

RAEN
Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Royal St. Robert Cuvée 2021
Beautifully defined, with pinpoint damson plum, mulberry and blood orange notes stretched out over a frame of rooibos tea and savory accents. Mouthwatering through the lengthy, unadorned finish, which relies on tension and purity. Drink now through 2032. 2,075 cases made.

From: 2022 Sonoma: A First Look (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert is striking. Vibrant and savory, the 2022 marries notable fruit intensity with strong floral, earthy and savory top notes. Bright red-toned fruit, orange peel, cinnamon, star anise and cedar lift from the glass. Deep and dense, yet also wonderfully crystalline, the 2022 is lights out. What a wine.
- By Antonio Galloni on January 2024
This is a superb set of 2022s from brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. Sadly, yields are down a punishing 40-50%, mostly because of frost in May. “We had small clusters and tiny berries with thick skins,” Carlo Mondavi explained. The 2022 Pinots are intense, dark wines. As always, the Pinots are done with 100% whole clusters. In 2022, the interplay of huge fruit with intense stem character makes for wines that are beguiling but also need cellaring to be at their best. Time in barrel remains around ten months. I was also deeply impressed with the Chardonnay from the Martinelli family’s Charles Ranch in Fort Ross-Seaview. It’s one of the best 2022 Chardonnays I have tasted so far.
