the history of Marqués de Riscal

Marqués de Riscal is one of Spain's most iconic wineries. Founded in 1858, it has been a pioneer in the Rioja region ever since. The winery brought French techniques to Spain and introduced modern winemaking methods that remain leading today. The winery is located in Elciego, in the Rioja Alavesa region, where the combination of climate and soil produces refined and elegant wines. Marqués de Riscal is led by successive generations who safeguard the estate's heritage while simultaneously allowing room for innovation.

the Rioja Alavesa region

Located in the Basque Country, Rioja Alavesa is considered one of Rioja's most prestigious sub-zones. The vineyards are situated on terraces along the Ebro River and benefit from a combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. The climate is relatively mild with cool nights, which helps the grapes retain their freshness and acidity. The soils are chalky and stony, with clay and gravel providing excellent water management. This terroir gives the wines tension, elegance, and great aging potential.

Las Tapias vineyard

The Tapias de Marqués de Riscal 2022 comes from an exceptional 15-hectare vineyard located within the borders of Elciego. Planted in 1968 with select cuttings of old vines, this vineyard was left to mature for years. The soil consists of very old terraces of the Ebro River, with a prominent limestone layer at a depth of 70 centimeters. Some areas contain light deposits of iron-rich clay, which contribute to the wine's unique signature. Only 2.85 hectares of this plot were selected for the Tapias 2022, further emphasizing the wine's exclusivity.

the climate and the harvest of 2022

The year 2022 was one of the hottest in recent decades. The autumn preceding the growing season was exceptionally wet, resulting in well-saturated soil. Periods of frost occurred in January and April, but the vines were largely spared. From May onwards, temperatures averaged two degrees higher than normal, and a prolonged drought prevailed. This made phenolic ripening more difficult, but thanks to the drop in temperature in September, the grapes were still able to fully ripen. The harvest began on September 12th and yielded healthy grapes with excellent color, aroma, and balance.

vinification and maturation

The Tapias de Marqués de Riscal 2022 is made entirely from Tempranillo. The wine fermented under controlled conditions and then aged for 17 months in French Bordeaux oak barrels, 30% of which were new. This aging adds complexity and depth without overpowering the fruit. The result is a wine that is both powerful and refined, with a distinct mineral character.

color, smell and taste

The Tapias 2022 presents itself with a deep ruby-red color. The nose reveals aromas of red berries such as currant and cherry, complemented by subtle notes of mint, spice, and a hint of smoke. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet elegant, with a long, fresh finish. The texture is creamy, and the concentration of silky tannins provides structure without harshness. This already makes the wine appealing, but its balance and depth also give it excellent aging potential.

a wine with a future

This vintage showcases the unique combination of power and finesse that characterizes Marqués de Riscal. Thanks to its excellent aging and balanced profile, the wine has great potential to continue to develop in the bottle for decades to come. For serious wine lovers and sommeliers, this is a wine that will bring great pleasure both now and in the future.

Marqués de Riscal was founded in 1858 by Camillo Hurtado de Amézega, Marquess of Riscal. He owns vineyards and a bodega on the 'Torrea' estate and has lived in Bordeaux since 1836. He is asked by the directors of the Alava district, because of his expertise, to find a winemaker who should be able to to introduce wine growers in La Rioja to the techniques used in the Médoc.Eventually one Jean Pineau, winemaker at Château Lanessan, is contracted to fulfill this mission. That same year, the Marquis of Riscal shipped to the Rioja district '9,000 fully guaranteed young vines' of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Pinot Noir varieties. Objective: to experiment with renowned wine varieties, in an area where so far mainly Tempranillo and Graciano dominated.

Today Marqués de Riscal has remained true to the old principles, the heritage of the ancestors. New insights have led to continuous refinement of the process and product quality. The company pays a lot of money and attention to research and development. Among other things, this policy has led to the installation of two manual selection tables, a unique system in Spain, so far actually only used at top-Châteaux in Bordeaux.

In addition to the Rioja wines such as the Chirel and Gran Reserva, Marques de Riscal in the Rueda also makes great Verdejo wines under the name: Marques de Riscal Finca Montico Verdejo.
