Description
Winery Maison Evenstad and its origins in Burgundy
Maison Evenstad was born from the visionary project of Ken and Grace Evenstad, American wine pioneers who first made a name for themselves with their Domaine Serene in Oregon. Their love for Burgundy led to the acquisition of Domaine Christian Confuron, which has since continued under the name Domaine Evenstad. From their base in Prémeaux-Prissey, south of Nuits-Saint-Georges, they make refined terroir wines from the Côte de Nuits. The vineyards are characterized by chalky clay soil, a cool continental climate with warm summers and sufficient rainfall for a balanced ripening of the grapes.
Unique terroir and location of Aux Croix Rouges
The climat 'Aux Croix Rouges' is located in the northern part of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, at the foot of the hills. The 30-year-old vines are planted on a clay-rich soil with a lot of loam and gravel. Thanks to the eastern orientation, the grapes benefit from morning sun, which ensures a slow and even ripening. What is special is that this wine is made from 100% Pinot Blanc - a rarity in Burgundy where this grape is officially permitted within the AOC Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Grapes, harvest and vinification of this white Burgundy
The 2022 vintage was harvested on September 10th and bottled on April 10th, 2024. After the manual harvest, the grapes were carefully pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures. The wine was aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. This wood aging gives the wine structure and aging potential, without losing the freshness typical of Pinot Blanc.
Flavor profile, aroma and color of the Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Croix Rouges 2022
This wine is reserved, mineral and extremely precise in its youth. In the glass it shows a bright straw yellow colour with green reflections. The nose opens with floral aromas of white flowers, citrus zest and subtle notes of wet stone and almond. In the mouth it is tight and lively, with an elegant tension and a refined structure. The finish is fresh, slightly salty and leaves an impression of lime and lime. After a few years of maturation, this wine develops extra depth, with more aromatic complexity and creaminess. The Maison Evenstad Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Croix Rouges is elegant, mineral and rare: a white Burgundy of 100% Pinot Blanc from Nuits-Saint-Georges from very old vines. This is a super scarce white Burgundy
