Description
The Juan Gil Silver Label (also called the 12 Meses or Etiqueta Plata) is made from the Monastrell grape (Mourvedre) and comes from vineyards over 50 years old. Juan Gil was one of the first wineries to show a strong commitment to our planet. All energy is generated by solar panels and wind turbines, there is no irrigation, and no chemicals are used. This Juan Gil Silver Label is therefore certified organic and vegan. The wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. The color is purple-red, and the nose reveals notes of red and black fruit, such as red currant and blackberry. There are also beautiful notes of smoked wood and espresso. The finish reveals refined tannins. This is simply a fantastic wine, and the price-quality ratio is especially impressive. Furthermore, this wine is made with respect for nature and no chemicals were used. Starting with the 2019 vintage, they eliminated all raisins with their new optical sorting machine, resulting in exceptionally clean wines and further enhancing precision. They also reduced the toastiness of their barrels, enhancing the integration of the oak with the fruit.
The Juan Gil Silver Label is a fantastic wine with braised vegetables or a stew, and highly recommended with grilled bavette and slow-cooked pork belly. We think it's practically made to pair with BBQ/Green Egg spareribs—it's such a fantastic combination. Magnum version of 1.5 liters.
FACT: The Juan Gil Silver Label is an International Award Winner for a reason. For years, top Australian winemaker Chris Ringland has been overseeing the Gil Family project in Spain. Chris Ringland is no stranger to success, having scored 100/100 no fewer than 11 times at Parker.
Juan Gil, a family business founded in 1916 in the heart of Jumilia, is a champion of establishing Jumilia as a top wine region. It has led several winemakers to champion the prestige and potential of the region's wines and the qualities of the Monastrell grape. True to its roots, this winery has seamlessly blended tradition and modern technology with respect for the environment. Juan Gill is also the producer of the famous Clio and the world-renowned El Nido . We won't deny it; we're huge fans of Juan Gill and especially appreciate that they offer both top-tier wines, such as Clio and El Nido, as well as wines crafted with love and high quality that are also very affordable. All wines offer unbeatable value for money.
In addition to the Silver Label, Juan Gil also has the Yellow Label (4-6 months maturation) and the Blue Label (18 months maturation) and of course the fantastic Juan Gil Blanco and Juan Gil Rosé .

The 2022 Silver Label now shows the name on the label (and also "Etiqueta Plateada" in Spanish). It's their first wine in their new era, which started in 2002, a wine that aims to promote the quality and potential of Monastrell. It matured in new and second-use French oak barrels for one year, but they were looking for lower toast and less impact of the wood in the wine than earlier vintages when it was 100% new oak. It has a paler color and a subtler and more floral nose, keeping the poise and showing surprisingly fresh for the conditions of the year. It's ripe, reflecting the warm and dry weather, with 15% alcohol but very good freshness, coming through as balanced and harmonious, clean and pure. This is a bargain and a success for the year, a champion in drinkability. Bravo! 298,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.
From the 2023 harvest, all the vineyards from Juan Gil, some 900 hectares (!), are certified organic, and the wines too. There's a clear focus on sustainability here, way beyond cultivating organically, using solar power, recycling residues and generating their own compost, etc. They now produce around three million bottles, but 2022 and 2023 have seen low yields because of the extreme heat and drought. The two vintages are different, despite being warm and dry. In 2022, they had lots of rain in March, which provided the plants with good reserves; and there was also some rain in late September/early October, so they could harvest the old vines into late October. In 2023, it was a lot more complicated, and they only harvested 25% of what they normally do; so, the 2023 wines are a lot more powerful, concentrated and muscular.

Rich and fruity, but also deep, with ripe blackberries, figs, spice and dark chocolate on the nose. Just a hint of dried fruit here. This is restrainedly generous with a medium to full body, showing creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. A very solid monastrell. From organically grown grapes. Vegan.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio
Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.
