2022 Herdade do Sobroso Elevage Tinto

Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary Rio dos Patos or the river of the ducks. The trademark is therefore the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for ripening the grapes and only a few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very fine wines because there is never a water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo that has the influence of the ocean that ensures healthy ripening.

The Élevage Tinto is the absolute top model of Herdade do Sobroso and is a selection of the best grapes of Alicante Bouschet from the shale-clay plots facing south. Shale or schist is the rock that is most often associated with landslides. Through weathering, the shale changes into a clay-rich soil and looks very much like slate but is more brittle. The grapes are picked by hand and are selected down to the level of the berry. After fermentation in "lagar" with controlled temperature, the wine matures for 12 months in amphora. This wine is silky smooth, wonderfully dry with only pure aromas of ripe red fruit, plums, blackberries and cherries. Ripe and supple tannins. Intense, deep and fresh, which reveals the purity of the aromas. The vines on this schist soil give a unique minerally chalky touch to the wine. This is a fantastic wine of which only a few hundred bottles are made only in the best years. The Amphoras education gives the most honest representation of a wine. It does give the minimum oxygen permeation as with a wooden barrel but does not add any flavors. Put this on the table next to a (much more expensive) Bourgogne and be surprised. A nice element is that the cork of this beautiful bottle is replaced with an amphora/clay seal with the logo of Herdade do Sobrroso.

Combine this beautiful wine with traditional Portuguese meat dishes or with mature cheeses. Beautiful to drink, but can certainly still cellar for 10+ years. Open early in its young years or decant and pour this wine a large, spacious glass. For example, our beautiful Spiegelau Bourgogne glasses.

  The wine's full body and ripe tannins enhance the rich flavors of braised beef, while the acids keep the dish nicely balanced.

  The powerful and spicy character of the wine goes perfectly with the juiciness of the entrecote and the creaminess of the sauce.

• Pasta with mushrooms and Parmesan cheese
  The earthy notes of mushrooms and the savoury cheese combine beautifully with the ripe fruit and spiciness of the wine.

• Roasted peppers stuffed with minced meat and rice
  The sweetness of the peppers and the savoury filling are nicely balanced by the fruity and spicy structure of the wine.

• Lamb chops with thyme and garlic
  The wine's firm structure and spicy notes go perfectly with the distinctive flavour of lamb and Mediterranean herbs.
