Description
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso has a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana River and its river Rio dos Patos or the River of the Ducks. The trademark is the ducks on the labels. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes and few vineyards have this luxury and this partly explains why this winery can make very beautiful wines because there is never any water debt. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region has the influence of the ocean that ensures healthy ripening and the wind keeps the vineyards healthier without the need to work with chemicals.
The Arche is the flagship and top model of Herdade do Sobroso. This is produced in very small quantities and only in the best years. The Arche Branco is a new version that sees the light of day with the 2021 vintage. This beautiful Herdade do Sobroso ASrche Branco is a blend of Arinto and Antão Vaz. The grapes come from special plots and selected vines. These vines are pruned very rigorously so that only a very limited harvest is made from each vine (less than 1kg), but these grapes are of the very best quality. Everything in the process is manual. After fermentation in stainless steel barrels under controlled temperatures, the wine matures for 12 months in new French oak barrels of 500 liters and the wine is bottle-aged for another 14 months in the estate's cellars.
In the glass, the Arche Branco has a beautiful golden color, intense aroma, full of sensations of grapefruit, orange peel, honey and spices. Intense, enormous freshness, perfect balance and elegance with a fascinating and characteristic aftertaste. The wine is already very nice to drink, but needs some decanting, but can also be kept in the cellar for 10+ years and will then be further refined. A beautiful acidity accompanied by beautiful fruit. This is a meditation wine and can easily compete with a (much more expensive) Burgundy.
Fact : The Arches of Herdade do Sobroso are a tribute to the founder of Ginestal Machado. The name ARCHÉ is a Greek name and means "Head" and together with the spelling of the E this is a "Tékton", which means "creator". Together the word "architect" or the Chief Creator is formed. In the 'Appendices' tab you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will send this to you automatically when you order this wine. The wine is stored in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will often receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose 'Collect' on the checkout page. We are located in Dordrecht almost next to the A16 with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.

Professional Reviews
Parker
The 2019 Arché is a roughly equal blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet aged for 12 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This is a nice blend, ripe but not overripe, fresh and tasty. It has a backbone but nothing astringent. It is mostly fruit forward, the blend showing some complexity and nuance. This isn't showing badly now, but it will be better next year. It may age another decade, more or less. It is well done and rather elegant too.
Filipe Pinto, winemaker, and Sofia Machado (sales, marketing) represented the winery for this report. They are also the owners, having purchased it in 2000, and husband and wife.

Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine producing regions in Portugal with reports of wine being made here since before the Roman occupation of the Iberia Peninsula. Furthermore, Herdade do Sobroso as a perfect location with its vineyards located on the banks of the Guadiana river.
Its location between the river on the south and the hills on the north make the perfect conditions for the ripening of the grapes. Also, besides being inland, this region is the single one in Alentejo with the influence of the coastal weather which provides for cool summer nights thus providing for great thermal amplitudes which improve the ripening. With its 1600 hectares, Herdade do Sobroso is a landmark of the region.
It's 60 hectares of vineyard, the Luxury Wine Hotel and abundant wildlife make it a mandatory passage point. In its premises is possible to stay hosted at the hotel while visiting the winery and having wine tastings as well as visiting the estate premises on the search of the local wildlife. Perfect for the amateurs in search of the wild boars and deer as well as the more curious birdwatchers.Producing wine since 2006, Herdade do Sobroso soon established its reputation of making singular, terroir respecting wines that conquer admirers all over the world. Using local varieties such as Trincadeira, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Antão Vaz, Alvarinho, together with French varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Petit Verdot.
Herdade do Sobroso is managing the vineyard according to the Sustainability principals, respecting the autochthonous fauna and flora, while the winemaking process is non-interventionist to respect the terroir.
