Persoonlijke gegevens
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso enjoys a perfect location with its vineyards situated on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary, the Rio dos Patos, or the River of the Ducks. Consequently, the ducks on the labels are its trademark. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes, a luxury few vineyards enjoy, which partly explains why this winery can produce such fine wines, as there is never a water shortage. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo influenced by the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening. This beautiful Herdade do Sobroso Cellar Selection Tinto is a blend of Alicante Boushet and Syrah.
The Syrah and Alicante Bouchet grapes for this Herdade do Sobroso Cellar Selection Tinto were hand-picked and only very gently crushed. The wine fermented in open fermentation vats under controlled temperature and was subsequently aged for over 12 months in new 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by a further 6-9 months of bottle aging. In the glass, the wine has a beautiful red color. On the nose, the wine displays lovely notes of ripe red fruit, cocoa, and jam. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a long-lasting and elegant finish. The quality of this wine is evident, as everything is truly so beautifully balanced—freshness, fruit, and measured alcohol—we would almost call it a Portuguese Burgundy, and winemaker Filipe Teixeira Pinto thought so too, as this beauty is also bottled in a fine Burgundy bottle. Pair this magnificent wine with traditional Portuguese meat dishes or mature cheeses. Beautiful to drink now, but can certainly cellar for another 10+ years. In its early years, open or decant early and pour this wine into a large, spacious glass. For example, our beautiful Spiegelau Bourgogne glasses.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.
Herdade do Sobroso as an experience
Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
