Description
Discover the exclusive Gianfranco Es, an icon among Primitivo wines, sourced from a carefully managed micro-production of just 7,000 bottles annually. This is the result of an extremely low yield, with an average of only 200 grams of grapes per vine harvested from a 50-year-old vineyard. Rigorous pruning techniques leave only a few bunches per vine, allowing each grape to benefit from the maximum nutrition drawn from the ancient roots by the deep, nutrient-rich soil. The biodynamic principles employed during cultivation emphasize the commitment to sustainability and quality.
At the winery, the carefully selected grapes undergo a gentle pressing, followed by fermentation and maceration in 600-liter oak barrels at a temperature between 23-25°C. After initial processing, the wine is aged for approximately 10 months in new French oak, adding complexity and structure. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration and then aged in the bottle for a minimum of 6 months before release.
The Gianfranco Es presents a deep concentration of flavors with an incredibly fresh, perfectly balanced acidity. This makes it not only the finest high-end Primitivo on the market, but also a wine of unparalleled depth and complexity, highly prized by connoisseurs and critics alike. Every aspect of this wine, from vineyard to glass, testifies to the art of winemaking and the passion for quality that characterizes Gianfranco Fino. This is a must-have for collectors and a true experience for any lover of exceptional Italian wines. Gianfranco Fino has been voted Italy's best wine several times.
This is a magnum edition in OWC/1 - Even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.

1. Tagliatelle with tomato sauce and roasted aubergine
The juicy tomato sauce provides a soft counterpoint to the fuller, ripe fruit in the wine, while the roasted eggplant enhances the spicy notes.
2. Grilled ribeye with rosemary and garlic
The fatty meat is balanced by the wine's robust structure. The rosemary and garlic accentuate the Mediterranean and spicy notes.
3. Rice dish with chorizo and paprika
The smokiness of the chorizo adds body to the wine's tannins. Paprika adds a fruity sweetness that harmonizes with the black fruit profile.
4. Polenta with beef stew and Parmesan cheese
The rich stew prepares the wine with its deep flavors, while the cheese brightens the fruit and softens the wine.
5. Roasted mushroom risotto with sage
The earthy notes of mushrooms and sage complement the wine's hint of Mediterranean herbs perfectly. The texture creates an exciting combination.
6. Stuffed chicken fillet with mozzarella and sun-dried tomatoes
The juiciness of the fish dish or stuffed chicken creates a vibrant contrast with the concentrated flavours of the Primitivo, while the dish retains its elegant acidity.

Gianfranco Fino gives us another treat in the form of the decadently rich and unctuous 2016 Primitivo di Manduria Es. This is a landmark wine from Puglia that expertly weaves together concentration, richness and power, resulting in one of the most emblematic wines to emerge from the sun-scorched instep of Italy's boot. This Primitivo, drawn from vineyards less than 100 meters from the sea-level stretch of Greek settlements along the Ionian, weighs in with a Herculean 16.5% alcoholic content. Thanks to nine months of barrique aging, you get plenty of sweet spice and mesquite on the close. The 2016 vintage offers bright fruit with plum, prune and dried blackberry, perfect for a heavy potato, tomato and red meat stew. Some 15,000 bottles were made.
(ES means wild passion, a passion which does not give into rules or compromises. It is the expression of instinct into wine.) - Gambero Rosso 2011: Tre Bicchieri-Award! : Very high quality. The nose offers a broad, intense, spice-and-balsam bouquet with notes of tobacco and wild berries tot the fore. The palate is rich, full, deep, elegant and fresh despite rich alcohol and sweet fruit notes with a long expansive finish.

A very intensely fruity wine with a layered profile, from sweet blackcurrants to smashed roses, black cherries and a whiff of spiciness. The palate is dry to off-dry, full-bodied, soft and smooth. It has a leesy drinkability for its lushness and moderate acidity. Polished yet warming finish. Drink or hold.

Good full ruby. Brooding aromas of dark cherry, cassis, milk chocolate, tobacco and aromatic herbs. Dense and opulent in the mouth, with the superripe red fruit flavors lifted by a violet quality. Wonderfully energetic for such a fat, decadently styled wine, finishing with noble, velvety tannins and palate-saturating ripe red fruits and minerals. This is an amazing wine made from century-old primitivo vines and minuscule yields. It has had nothing but a string of outstanding vintages right from day one, and is now rightfully considered to be one of Italy's top 20 red wines.

Start winegrowing in 2004 and make the best wine in Italy 10 years later? Sounds like a romantic dream, but Gianfranco Fino has only just done it. He started in Manduria with a small plot of land with 50-year-old Primitivo vines, striving for an extremely low yield per vine and, unlike many other winemakers, relying on the naturally occurring wild yeasts. Slowly he expanded the number of hectares and also planted Negroamaro.
A perfectionist with an eye for detail who does everything differently in the vineyard than the rest. He even lets his grapes dry on the vine for a while for even more flavor and sugar concentration. Although this reduces the alcohol percentage to a great height, without disturbing the balance in the wine. That drive and idiosyncratic approach has ensured that Fino's wines are among the absolute top in Italy, as witnessed by the superlatives in Gambero Rosso. His achievements have also definitively established Puglia's name as a reference for quality wine.
