the story of gianfranco fino and jo

Gianfranco Fino is one of Southern Italy's most renowned winemakers. His focus is on producing wines that capture the soul of Salento, with respect for tradition and terroir. The name "Jo" refers to the Ionian Sea, which laps the coast of Manduria, and is also an ancient name for the Negroamaro grape, the region's most characteristic variety. With this wine, Gianfranco Fino pays tribute to his origins and the strength of the native grape varieties.

vineyards and terroir

Jo's grapes are grown in the rural surroundings of Manduria, an area known as the birthplace of Negroamaro. The vineyards are situated on a flat plain, characterized by clay and limestone soils that give the wine distinct structure and minerality. Thanks to the warm Mediterranean climate and the cooling influence of the Ionian Sea, the grapes develop their characteristic intensity and concentration, while retaining their freshness.

grape variety and harvest

Jo is a 100% Negroamaro, harvested in the second half of September. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with only the healthiest bunches selected. The grapes are collected in small crates and transported to the cellar in refrigerated trucks to ensure freshness. This meticulous approach lays the foundation for a wine that reflects its origins with purity and power.

vinification and maturation

After harvest, the grapes undergo rigorous selection on the sorting table, followed by destemming and a soft pressing. The must ferments in stainless steel tanks with a maceration period of two to three weeks. During this period, the skins remain in contact with the juice for color, aroma, and tannin. Two delestages are performed daily to optimally control the extraction. After a soft pressing, the wine is aged in oak for approximately nine months. It is then bottled unfiltered and rests in the bottle for approximately twelve months before being released.

color, smell and taste

Jo presents itself with a deep ruby red color. The bouquet opens with ripe aromas of black fruit such as blackberry and cherry, complemented by notes of spice, tobacco, and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with a firm structure and ripe, silky tannins. The oak aging imparts subtle notes of cocoa and vanilla, while the finish remains long and layered. This is a Negroamaro that combines power with elegance and finesse.

storage potential

The 2023 Jo is already seductive with its ripe fruit and warm notes, yet possesses sufficient structure to develop further. Its aging potential is around 8 to 10 years, during which time the wine will gain complexity and softness.

Start winegrowing in 2004 and make the best wine in Italy 10 years later? Sounds like a romantic dream, but Gianfranco Fino has only just done it. He started in Manduria with a small plot of land with 50-year-old Primitivo vines, striving for an extremely low yield per vine and, unlike many other winemakers, relying on the naturally occurring wild yeasts. Slowly he expanded the number of hectares and also planted Negroamaro.

A perfectionist with an eye for detail who does everything differently in the vineyard than the rest. He even lets his grapes dry on the vine for a while for even more flavor and sugar concentration. Although this reduces the alcohol percentage to a great height, without disturbing the balance in the wine. That drive and idiosyncratic approach has ensured that Fino's wines are among the absolute top in Italy, as witnessed by the superlatives in Gambero Rosso. His achievements have also definitively established Puglia's name as a reference for quality wine.
