Description
What an incredible wine for this price! This Pruno from Finca Villacreces is still young but has a lot of potential for years to come. This beautiful wine consistently receives high ratings from the international wine press, and Finca Villacreces has proven its ability to produce consistent quality year after year. Parker states in his review: "WOW—a wine like this normally costs between $75 and $150!!!" and refers to it as "over-delivery."
Finca Villacreces: iconic location among top estates
Finca Villacreces is situated in a unique location in the Ribera del Duero, on the so-called "Milla de Oro" – the region's golden mile. The estate borders none other than Vega Sicilia , Spain's most renowned winery. World-renowned winemaker Peter Sisseck also used Villacreces grapes for his iconic Pingus wine. This location underscores the enormous potential of the Villacreces terroir.
The estate boasts 64 hectares of vineyards, spread across 15 different plots. The vineyards average 25 years old and are situated at an altitude of 710 meters. The soils consist of a mix of sand, loam, and gravel – ideal for producing elegant, fruit-driven wines with a vibrant character.
2022: a hot year, surprisingly fresh results
Despite the hot summer and early harvest in 2022, Finca Villacreces produced a wine that combines freshness, balance, and drinkability with concentration. The blend consists of 93% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1% Merlot, sourced from the company's own vineyards, Villacreces and Pinos Claros. Yields were kept low at 5,000 kg per hectare, ensuring ripe fruit and structure.
Vinification and maturation
After hand-harvesting into small crates and double selection, the grapes underwent cold maceration and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation took place in a combination of tanks, wooden barrels, and barriques. The wine then matured for 10 months in a mix of French (75%) and American (25%) oak barrels from renowned cooperages such as Darnajou, Taransaud, Demptos, and Berthomieu. Only second- and third-year oak was used to preserve the fruit character.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, Pruno 2022 displays a deep cherry red color with a purple rim. The bouquet opens with notes of roasted cocoa, balsamic vinegar, and ripe red fruit like cherry and strawberry. On the palate, it is juicy and silky, with round tannins and a lively acidity that provides freshness. The palate is rounded out by notes of caramel, chocolate, and spices. This is a modern Ribera that combines power and finesse in an accessible style.
Robert Parker's Review – The Wine Advocate
Luis Gutiérrez of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate awarded the 2022 Pruno 92 points and called the wine a positive surprise: "much better than expected after a scorching summer and early harvest." He praised the balance, freshness, juicy texture, and clean aromas. At 14.05% alcohol, the wine retains elegance and drinkability.
Serving tips and storage potential
This wine is perfect for drinking now, but can easily age until 2028. Serve slightly chilled at 16°C to fully appreciate its freshness. Decanting isn't necessary, but with younger bottles, it can further reveal the aromas and structure.

As I've often heard and seen in this vintage, the result of the 2022 Pruno has been much better than expected after a torrid summer and an early harvest. The wine keeps its balance and poise, its fruit-driven personality and the approachability from previous years. It has contained ripeness, 14.05% alcohol, clean aromas and a juicy and velvety texture. Highly drinkable. It's a blend of 94% Tinto Fino, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. 575,651 bottles,10,000 magnums and 100 double magnums produced, so availability shouldn't be a problem. It was bottled in November 2023.
Starting with the 2021 harvest, all of the vineyards and wines from Finca Villacreces are certified organic. Finca Villacreces was created in 1994, and it's the Ribera del Duero project from the Izadi/Artevino group since the Antón family purchased the company in 2004. They purchased a further 9.5 hectares of old vines in 2022, a high-altitude plot with the idea to release a new wine from it in 2025. As with other wineries in the group, they implemented changes in their viticulture in 2022 to be able to harvest earlier as, like many others, they started the search for wines with lower alcohol and more longevity, also pushed by the scarcity of water. As for the wines, they also made some changes to use less new wood, co-fermenting with some white and using a small percentage of full clusters. They currently own 154 hectares of vineyards and produce 550,000 to 685,000 bottles, depending on the vintage.

From: Duero: From Ribera to Toro via Rueda (And a Few Other Detours) (Jun 2025)
The 2022 Pruno blends 94% Tempranillo with 5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot, grown in Ribera del Duero and was aged 12 months in barrel. Black and red fruit, intense balsamic notes, forest floor and a touch of sun open on the nose, while oak stays in the background. The palate is slightly hollow, with robust tannins and high alcohol, offering a rugged profile reminiscent of youthful energetic vines.

The winery Finca Villacreces is located in a beautiful area. The winery is located right next to Duero, next to the well-known Vega Sicilia. The winery has 115 hectares of estate, of which 60 hectares are vineyards. The 60 hectares of vineyards are spread over 15 different places, all of which contribute to the quality of these delicious wines. Because the area is very sandy and the location of the vineyards is high, it is not easy to get certain grapes ripe. However, the pine trees that are more than 100 years old do cooperate for the grapes that are difficult to ripen.
The climate is extremely different, the temperature can rise to 40 degrees, but also drop to 10 degrees below zero. The nearby river; de Duero, ensures that the grapes survive the warm climate. Finca Villacreses is a very popular winery partly because of the Pruno wine which offers an unprecedented beautiful glass of wine for the money. The fact that it has been repeatedly named best value wine by the Wine Advocate naturally also helps. Other highly recommended wines are the Finca Villacres wine and the cult wine Nebro (the latter two are only made in good years).
The Finca Villacreces is an old abbey located on the “Golden Mile” along the river Duero in the designation of origin Ribera del Duero in Spain.
THE TERROIR: The total area of the estate is 115 hectares, of which 60 hectares are vineyards. This 60 hectare is spread over 15 different plots, all of which contribute to the quality of the wines in this impressive domain. The sandy soil and the high location of the vineyards do not make it easier to ripen the planted grapes tinta del païs (tempranillo), merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The more than 100 years old pine trees do contribute to a microclimate in which the grapes feel good and the harvests are of an exceptionally high level in recent years.
FROM STICK TO HARVEST: Due to the high location, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular have a very hard time ripening. In recent years, a lot has been invested in the vineyards: drip irrigation, the sticks are tied up higher to get more leaf and so better photosynthesis and the young plantings of the newest vineyards are already producing unprecedented quality fruit.
FROM HARVEST TO WINE: Only at optimal maturity are grapes harvested here, resulting in beautifully concentrated wines with a fine acidity. All Finca Villacreces wines undergo malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Depending on the wine, the aging is determined on casks. Of course, the harvest year also influences this and there is a deviation from the standard. Pruno is aged for 12 months, Reserva for 16 months and Nebro for 18 months. After bottling, the bottles remain in the cellar for a long time before being put on the market. This is shorter for the Pruno than for the other wines.
