Description
Domäne Serrig and the vision of Markus Molitor
Domäne Serrig is one of the most impressive vineyards on the Saar, a tributary of the Mosel River. For several years now, the estate has been under the care of Markus Molitor , a name synonymous with great Riesling worldwide. Molitor took over the family business at a young age and built it into a benchmark in the Mittelmosel region with over 120 hectares of vineyards. His style is uncompromising: he opts for minimal intervention in the cellar, a very strict selection in the vineyard, and works with mass selection instead of standard clones. This way, each wine preserves the pure expression of its terroir.
In 2016, Markus Molitor acquired the historic Domäne Serrig, once a Prussian state estate, and began a large-scale restoration. Nearly half of the 40-hectare estate's potential has now been replanted, largely with Riesling, with many young vines originating from his own large-scale selection. By working with humus formation, straw mulch, and interrow herbs, the soil's vitality is maintained, even in hot and dry years.
The location and the special terroir of the Vogelsang
The Vogelsang Grosse Lage vineyard lies directly on the Saar River and is one of the region's most famous plots. The soil consists of weathered schist and slate that continually crumbles and mineralizes. This ensures continuous renewal of the terroir, allowing the Riesling vines to develop extremely deep roots and acquire a unique minerality. The cool climate of the Saar, combined with the high altitude and the significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, produces grapes with intense aromas, high acidity, and enormous aging potential.
The 2022 harvest was challenging due to the exceptionally hot and dry summer, but thanks to strict selection and low yields, the plot yielded grapes of remarkable freshness and precision. This resulted in a wine that, despite the heat of the year, shows no trace of stress, but rather tension and finesse.
Vinification and maturation of the 2022 Vogelsang Grosse Lage
For the 2022 Domäne Serrig Vogelsang Grosse Lage Riesling, the grapes were harvested entirely by hand. The selection was rigorous, with only perfectly healthy grapes used. Pressing took place slowly in a traditional basket press. Fermentation proceeded spontaneously with natural yeasts in large 3,000-liter wooden vats, some of which were in stainless steel. Both portions remained on the fine lees until the summer following the harvest, giving the wine structure and added complexity.
The result is a wine that, according to international critics, is considered a textbook example of a Saar Riesling: light-hearted in alcohol, but with enormous depth, lively acidity and an intense mineral signature.
Tasting note of the Domäne Serrig Vogelsang 2022
The 2022 Vogelsang displays a bright, light yellow color with green highlights. The nose reveals citrus, yellow apple, pineapple, and subtle floral notes, interwoven with a salty minerality and a hint of flint. With aeration, nuances of lemon peel and spice emerge, adding further complexity to the wine.
On the palate, the wine is refined and crystal clear, with a delicate balance between ripe fruit and a striking, almost briny freshness. The structure is delicate yet intense, carried by a long, energetic finish. The mouthfeel is light yet layered, giving the wine a unique tension. It is a wine that already shines, but also has a long future ahead of it, with a drinking window that extends well beyond 2050.
Why this Riesling is so special
The combination of extremely low yields, old and young vines from high-altitude plots, and Molitor's uncompromising approach has resulted in a wine that is both delicate and powerful. International critics praise the 2022 Vogelsang for its purity, salinity, and impressive precision, a Riesling that both seduces with juicy fruit and displays a serious, terroir-driven signature. It is a wine that will delight fans of classic Saar Riesling and promises impressive longevity.

Markus Molitor's Saar Domäne Serrig 2022 Kabinett Vogelsang is remarkably pure, saline and intense on the nose, intermingling lush pineapple and tropical stone fruit aromas with notes of crystalline rocks, lemon oil and sea salt. It is certainly much more reductive than wines not coming from the Mosel and not being bottled with residual sugar. 2022 was an extremely warm and dry vintage, so Molitor's team in Serrig had to reduce yields dramatically in order to rescue the predominantly young vines. However, the nose doesn't show any hints of stress. This is a pure, fresh and savory as well as intense and slightly flinty-flavored Riesling from weathered slate, and it shows an iron-like twist with candied lemon notes and brown sugar on the nose. Lush yet crystalline and refined, this is an intense and very elegant yet weightless Kabinett whose richness is uplifted by a saline acidity and gorgeous finesse. This is a featherlight yet perfectly ripe, quite complex, immediately mouthwatering and aromatic Kabinett with sweet pineapple aromas, fine grip and, initially, the sharpness of a slate plate that becomes rounder with aeration. The Kabinett Prädikat is not interpreted as particularly light in terms of bright and airy Riesling here but instead a serious vin de terroir in the typical Saar style: light, crystalline, precise and saline but also hedonistic without being all too rich. This is a highly stimulating 2022 Kabinett with full ripeness, good concentration and a long, intense and aromatic finish with fine grip and mouthwatering salinity. It's a great, filigreed yet intense Kabinett in the style of a Kabinett that used to be, in the Rheingau of the early 20th century, the best wine of the vintage. 9.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2025.
2022 is the third vintage of Markus Molitor's Domäne Serrig, a former Prussian state property in the Saar Valley that he acquired in 2016 and is still restoring according to the original plans. Twenty-three of the potential 40+ hectares of the steep, predominantly south-facing slope are planted with Riesling, of which only five hectares are 20 to 25 years old, whereas the rest were planted at a high density between 2017 and 2019 with their own massal selections from the Mosel and Alsace. The yields were kept significantly low in 2022 due to the extreme drought and heat of the summer months, even though the soils are not extremely rocky and Molitor's vineyard culture focuses on humus formation. In addition to planting herbs between the rows, he spreads straw during the summer months to cover the soil and keep it moist, enriching it with humus as it decomposes.
2022 was not a perfect year for Kabinett, which is available but only in significantly smaller quantities than in the previous two years. It was harvested at around 80° Oechsle about two to three weeks before the grapes for the Grosse Lage, which, in the 2022 vintage, is just above the legal limit for dry and is actually a semi-dry or off-dry Riesling. For both wines, the handpicked grapes are pressed in a basket press and fermented spontaneously in 3,000-liter barrels, with half of the Kabinett also aged in stainless steel tanks. Both Rieslings were left on the lees until July of the following year and were bottled in the summer of last year. They will be released this fall—as always, exclusively through the Place de Bordeaux.

The interplay of leesy complexity, grapefruit energy and wet-stone freshness is extraordinary. Enormously concentrated, creamy and minerally on the compact, medium-bodied palate. Only just beginning to open up. With aeration bergamot, Amali lemon, fresh mint and dried flower aromas unfurl ever further. The steely minerality builds to a fantastic finish. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.

DOMÄNE SERRIG was founded in 1904 as a royal Prussian state domain in the Saar Valley; one of the largest and most avant-garde state domains of its time. The domain was privatized in the late 1980s and later taken over by Markus Molitor in 2016.
Only then did the domain benefit from extensive recultivation and restructuring of the site. The name of the vineyard is Volgelsang, a monopole of 25 hectares of unique quality, located on the south/southwest, with vines rising steeply from 150 to 340 meters on reddish shale soils and slopes up to 105%. Purist winemaking with grapes harvested and selected by hand, skin maceration (to reduce acidity), pressed by a traditional basket, natural spontaneous fermentation, maturation on the lees for 10 months in large Stockinger (Austrian) barrels (3,000 l) and then another 2 years of bottle aging before release.
