Description
The story of Domaine Marc Colin & Fils
Domaine Marc Colin & Fils is located in the village of Saint-Aubin, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune. Founded in the 1970s by Marc Colin, the family business quickly became one of the most respected producers of white Burgundy. Today, the estate is led by the next generation, including Damien Colin, who works with great precision and has taken winemaking to an even higher level.
The estate owns approximately twenty hectares of vineyards, spread across prestigious appellations such as Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Puligny-Montrachet. Marc Colin's wines are known for their pure expression of terroir: elegant, mineral, and perfectly balanced Chardonnays with characteristic tension and layering. The style is classic Burgundian, with restrained oak use and a natural freshness that gives each vintage character and precision.
The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard
Located precisely between Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, the Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet is one of Burgundy's most legendary terroirs. The mineral-rich limestone and clay soils offer excellent drainage and a favorable southeasterly exposure. The vines receive ample morning sun, ensuring optimal ripening of the Chardonnay grapes without sacrificing elegance.
Domaine Marc Colin owns a small parcel here, producing just two barrels of wine annually. It is an extremely rare cuvée that symbolizes the pursuit of precision and pure terroir expression. The wine is harvested exclusively by hand and undergoes rigorous selection before fermentation begins in 228-liter French oak barrels, with a limited proportion of new wood. Thanks to the small volumes, the wine can undergo extended aging (élevage), resulting in exceptional complexity and depth.
About the wine Domaine Marc Colin & Fils Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022
The 2022 vintage is considered by experts to be one of the estate's finest ever. Conditions were ideal: a warm but balanced growing season, healthy grapes, and sufficient freshness to maintain tension. According to The Wine Advocate's 95-point assessment, this is a deep, concentrated wine with aromas of pear, hazelnut, sweet citrus, and toasted bread. The wine is layered, textural, and multidimensional, with a subtly honeyed finish that adds elegance and length.
What makes this vintage special is the precision with which Damien Colin carried out the harvest. Because the estate is now smaller, he can assess each plot individually and harvest precisely at the moment of optimal ripeness. The percentages of new oak remain modest, allowing the fruit and terroir characteristics to fully express themselves. The result is a wine of impressive depth, but also with a refined energy that distinguishes it from many other Grand Crus from the same appellation.
Color, smell and taste
The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 displays a brilliant golden yellow color with a light sheen. The aroma opens with ripe pear, hazelnuts, citrus blossom, and subtle notes of toasted bread. As the wine opens, layers of honey, brioche, and white peach emerge. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet never heavy: a perfect balance between concentration and freshness. The texture is silky, with fine acidity that elegantly carries the whole. The finish is long, refined, and slightly honeyed, reflecting the ripeness and class of the vintage.
This is a wine with a long life ahead of it. The optimal drinking period begins around 2027, but the wine has the potential to continue developing until at least 2050. With age, it will develop even more complex aromas of nuts, caramel, and dried flowers, without losing its vibrant character.
The style and philosophy of the domain
The philosophy of Domaine Marc Colin & Fils revolves around precision and terroir fidelity. Small volumes, minimal intervention, and careful vinification result in wines that are pure, expressive, and authentic. Damien Colin deliberately chooses smaller oak barrels instead of large foudres, as these better suit the limited volumes and offer greater control over the wine's development.
The result is a style that combines power and elegance: wines with structure and depth, yet always retaining tension and refinement. The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022 is a striking example of this – a wine that brings precision, balance, and complexity in perfect harmony.

There are two barrels of the 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a deep, full-bodied and concentrated wine redolent of pear, hazelnuts, sweet citrus fruit and toasted bread. Layered, textural and multidimensional, it concludes with a delicately honeyed finish.
The 2022 vintage is the finest I can remember tasting at Domaine Marc Colin—and with years such as 2017 and 2020, the last decade has been mostly benevolent. As readers will remember, now that the domaine is smaller following his two brothers' secessions, he is able to be ultra-precise about harvest date, sampling parcel by parcel, he tells me, and small volumes of wine mean longer élevage is feasible too. Percentages of new oak are modest, but foudres and larger barrels are also out of the picture, Damien finding most coopers' 228-liter barrels more consistent and in any case, better adapted to vinifying smaller quantities.

Marc Colin comes from a wine family in Burgundy with a strong reputation. Together with his two sons, he manages a domain of 20 hectares located in the village of Saint-Aubin in the Côte de Beaune.
Marc Colin's production
He exclusively owns top appellations: Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Premier Cru vineyards in Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Saint-Aubin and Pernand-Vergelesses. This is very exceptional. This domaine is known for its quality, yet Colin sees an opportunity to continually improve this. That is why he is receiving increasingly favorable reviews in the international press. Colin's wines excel in purity and combine power with elegance. Perhaps a bit shy in their youth, but with enormous storage potential. Traditionally minded, he vinifies his wines with a remarkable intuition for nature. Although he is open to innovation, he sticks to a traditional style and strives for optimal freshness in his white wines and avoids the wood-dominated Chardonnay type. He is the most awarded winegrower from St-Aubin and owner of Restaurant Le Chassagne, which has 1 Michelin star.
