Description
Domaine Leflaive: an icon of Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive ranks among the absolute pinnacle of Burgundy and is renowned worldwide for its pure, precise, and timeless wines. Located in Puligny-Montrachet, the estate has been run by Brice de la Morandière since 2015, with winemaker Pierre Vincent in charge of the cellar. Leflaive pioneered biodynamic viticulture and remains true to a philosophy that emphasizes respect for terroir and natural harmony. Leflaive's style is characterized by tension, finesse, and an almost ethereal clarity—qualities that are fully expressed in their Grands Crus.
The Grand Cru Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet
The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet vineyard is located between Puligny-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet, on a gently sloping hillside with a limestone-rich clay subsoil. Domaine Leflaive owns a single 1.15-hectare plot here, planted in 1958 and 1959. These old vines produce low yields but grapes of exceptional concentration. The location offers protection from the wind and optimal sun exposure, resulting in a wine that combines power with freshness and deep, mineral elegance. The soil structure gives the wine its characteristic tension and refined length.
Biodynamic cultivation and manual harvesting
Like all their wines, this Grand Cru also comes from biodynamically farmed vineyards. The vineyard is tended entirely by hand, respecting the grapes' natural cycle. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with the grapes rigorously selected and harvested plot by plot at the optimal point of ripeness. This produces fruit with pure aromas and a perfect balance of ripeness and freshness.
Vinification and maturation
After a gentle pneumatic pressing, natural settling takes place for 24 hours. The must is then transferred to French oak barrels (approximately 25% new, sourced from both Allier and Vosges) for alcoholic fermentation. The wine is aged for twelve months in barrel, followed by six months in tank to preserve its freshness. Only minimal fining and light filtration are applied, so the wine retains its texture and natural purity. This method produces a wine that is balanced, expressive, and layered, with a long, mineral finish.
Tasting note
The 2022 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru displays a bright, light gold color with greenish reflections. The nose develops aromas of ripe pear, white flowers, hazelnut, and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny, and harmonious, with a cool, precise style that combines elegance with power. The finish is long, refined, and slightly saline, creating a refreshing tension. Compared to Leflaive's Les Pucelles, this Bienvenues possesses a little more density and texture, without sacrificing any finesse. The wine exudes class and refinement – a true Grand Cru with a refined soul.
Review by The Wine Advocate
The Wine Advocate awarded this 2022 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru a score of 95+ points . Reviewer William Kelley described the wine as "harmonious and silky, with aromas of pear, white flowers, hazelnut, and spice, medium to full-bodied with a seamless texture and a long, refreshing finish." Kelley notes that the wine has a slightly higher density than Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles, but is similar in style due to its fresh and balanced character. He praises the 2022 vintage from Domaine Leflaive for its focus on freshness, with a subtle, noble reduction that gives the wines added depth and complexity. This Grand Cru will develop beautifully from 2027 until well beyond 2050.
The style of the 2022 vintage
The 2022 vintage stands out for its vibrant balance between ripe fruit and natural acidity. Under Pierre Vincent's guidance, the grapes were harvested early to preserve tension and freshness. This results in wines that are lively, pure, and transparent, with a mineral backbone that gives them impressive aging potential. The Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet 2022 showcases this balance at its finest: charming and accessible in its youth, yet with clear potential to age gracefully.
Maturation and storage potential
The wine is still young, but promises to evolve beautifully. It will reach its peak between 2027 and 2050, with aromas of white flowers and pear gradually giving way to notes of honey, toasted hazelnut, and brioche. The combination of concentration, acidity, and texture makes this a wine of exceptional longevity and elegance – a Grand Cru that will only become richer and more complex with age.

Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, white flowers, hazelnuts and spices, Leflaive's 2022 Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a cool, harmonious, integrated profile and a long, mouthwatering finish. There's a touch more density here than in the Pucelles, but the two are quite similar in style this year.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

From: A Burgundy Intermezzo (Jul 2024)
The 2022 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a captivating sea cave and oyster shell-scented nose that is so different from the Puligny Premier Crus. The palate is slightly reductive but in a positive way, imparting a light bitterness and tension. There's tremendous weight on the finish, but it retains linearity and focus. This is another of Leflaive's 2022s that will demand time in bottle, but it is preloaded with potential.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
