Description
Domaine Leflaive: icon of Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is one of the most respected producers of white Burgundy. Located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, the estate has been known for generations for its unwavering dedication to terroir, expertise, and biodynamic principles. Under the leadership of Brice de la Morandière and winemaker Pierre Vincent, tradition and modern precision are combined. The result is a collection of wines that exude pure expression, tension, and balance—wines that rank among the absolute best in the world.
The Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru vineyard
Chevalier-Montrachet sits above the legendary Montrachet vineyard and is among the most prestigious Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune. Its location on the rocky slope above Puligny-Montrachet provides a perfect balance of sunlight and ventilation. Domaine Leflaive owns three parcels within the appellation: Chevalier du Bas Sud (planted in 1957 and 1958), Chevalier du Bas Nord (1955, 1964, and 1980), and Chevalier du Haut (1974). The total area covers 1.99 hectares. The thin clay layer over limestone soil gives the wine its signature minerality and tension, while the high altitude ensures freshness and aromatic intensity.
Biodynamic cultivation and manual harvesting
Domaine Leflaive has been operating entirely biodynamically since the 1990s, a choice that ensures healthy, vibrant soils and grapes of exceptional quality. Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with each bunch carefully selected. The winery monitors the optimal ripeness of each plot, resulting in a perfect balance of ripe fruit, freshness, and structure – precisely what makes the 2022 vintage so special.
Vinification and maturation
After a gentle pneumatic pressing, the must is allowed to settle for 24 hours and then transferred to French oak barrels, 25% of which are new. Alcoholic fermentation and aging take place for twelve months in oak barrels (primarily Allier and partly Vosges), followed by six months of rest in tank on the fine lees. The wine is minimally fined and lightly filtered. This approach, which prioritizes precision over extraction, results in a wine of rare purity and tension.
Tasting note
The 2022 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru presents itself as a wine of ethereal elegance. The nose opens with aromas of sweet citrus oil, white flowers, blanched almond, and fresh orchard fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied, satiny, and seamlessly interwoven, with a bright, mineral heart and a long, salty finish. The wine is both intense and weightless, with a wonderful balance between maturity and energy. Its refined structure and precision perfectly reflect the altitude and purity of the Chevalier-Montrachet terroir.
Review by The Wine Advocate
The Wine Advocate awarded the 2022 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru 97 points . William Kelley described the wine as “suave and ethereal, with aromas of citrus oil, white flowers, almond, and orchard fruit, satiny and seamless with a long, salty finish.” According to Kelley, Domaine Leflaive has once again created a 2022 vintage that prioritizes freshness and precision, with a subtle reductive touch that contributes to its complexity. The wine combines elegance with potency and will age gracefully from 2030 until at least 2055. It is a Grand Cru that enchants both now and will impress in the future with its layering and finesse.
Maturation and storage potential
The 2022 vintage is already expressive, but will truly reveal itself after several years of bottle aging. It reaches its peak between 2030 and 2055, evolving from fresh citrus and floral notes to more complex aromas of hazelnut, honey, and brioche. Its lively acidity and salty finish form the backbone of a wine that can age elegantly for decades. This is a wine collectors and connoisseurs will want in their cellars – a paragon of greatness within white Burgundy.

The 2022 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is suave and ethereal, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet citrus oil, white flowers, blanched almonds and crisp orchard fruit. Full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it's pure and precise, with a bright core of fruit and a long, saline finish.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

Though rich, this white is also dense, giving a feeling of intensity to the white peach, citronella and pastry aromas and flavors. Well-proportioned, yet will require some time to really harmonize and reveal all its charms. Long, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2032.

From: Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet: 1981-2012 (Sep 2019)
Bright light-medium yellow. Alluring scents of citrus fruits, white peach, oatmeal and rocky minerality complicated by toasty and yeasty nuances. Tactile, sweet and deep, with liquid stone, lemon cream and almond paste flavors giving the wine an almost velvety texture. This utterly seamless grand cru initially displayed a nutty note of maturity but got better and better with air while retaining its energy. Finishes very long and gripping, with an impression of slatey minerality. (13.5% alcohol; 3.18 pH; September 1 harvest start)

From: 2008 and 2007 White Burgundies (Sep 2009)
Ineffable, discreet aromas of powdered stone, lemon peel, tangerine and flowers are complicated by an almost metallic minerality. Wonderfully succulent and silky in the mouth, but with a firm stony edge that gives it a rather uncompromising quality. An ethereal essence of wet stone minerality, this powerful, concentrated, classically dry wine is also compellingly smooth on the reverberating aftertaste.
- By Stephen Tanzer on September 2009
Cellarmaster Eric Remy describes 2008 as a classic vintage for Domaine Leflaive. Humid, showery weather had threatened widespread outbreaks of mildew and oidium, and Leflaive did a total of 13 treatments against vine maladies. After the rains of early September, the estate did a labor-intensive pass through the vines, eliminating 10% to 15% of the fruit. But then the north wind that began in the middle of the month saved the crop, concentrating sugars and acids. At the harvest, which started here on September 22, grape sugars were typically 12.8% to 13% or more (very little chaptalization was done), and acidity levels were around six grams, a high percentage of which was malic. The 2007s here, which had only recently been bottled at the time of my visit, emphatically showcase their various terroirs and would appear to be constituted for good medium-term aging. (Remy recommends waiting on the 2007s and drinking the 2006s earlier.) Incidentally, Domaine Leflaive is widely cited by long-time collectors as an estate that has largely avoided problems with premature oxidation. When I discussed this subject with Remy, the only recent vintage he had any doubts about was 2002. But he was not yet sure whether the variability he has noticed up to now is a function of corks or of the wines themselves. Clearly, the Leflaive whites gain in stability from an extended stay in cuves. For example, the 2007s remained in tanks from early September of 2008 until they were bottled in April and May of this year. I have omitted notes on a couple of 2008s that were in the middle of their malos (most of the premier crus were finished), but I have included early impressions of the very promising grand crus, which had not yet started their secondary fermentations.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
