Description
Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2022
Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is known for purity, precision, and biodynamic cultivation. In Bâtard-Montrachet, the estate owns several plots of old vines that produce wines with depth, structure, and a satiny texture. This 2022 vintage combines generous power with a cool, mineral core and a long, salty finish.
Terroir and origin of Bâtard-Montrachet
Bâtard-Montrachet is located between Puligny and Chassagne on clay and limestone. The soil provides volume and tension, and the location allows for optimal ripening while retaining freshness. The result is a Chardonnay with ripe white and yellow fruit, distinct minerality, and a broad, layered mouthfeel.
Vineyard work and harvest
Completely handcrafted in the vineyard, with attention to soil life, low yields, and strict selection. Harvesting took place at the moment when juicy ripeness and fresh acidity were in balance, creating a pure foundation for precise fermentation.
Vinification and maturation 2022
Gentle pressing, 24 hours of settling, and fermentation in French oak barrels with a modest proportion of new wood. Twelve months of barrel aging followed by approximately six months in tank on fine lees for added tension and clarity. Minimal fining and light filtration preserve texture and terroir expression.
Tasting note
Pale gold in the glass. The nose reveals sweet orchard fruit, peach, flowers, clear honey, and toasted nuts. Full and satiny on the palate with layered concentration, fine grip, and a long, mineral finish. The wine is more powerful and broader than Bienvenues, yet retains precision and freshness.
The Wine Advocate Review
RP 96. Described as more muscular and deeper, with sweet orchard fruit, peach, bright honey, roasted nuts, and flowers. Full-bodied, satiny-smooth, and textured, with good grip and a long, layered finish. Best before 2027 to 2050 .
Vintage 2022 at Domaine Leflaive
2022 yielded ripe yet fresh wines. Careful harvesting maintains the energetic style with a touch of noble reduction that integrates beautifully with bottle aging. Bâtard-Montrachet 2022 displays power, focus, and an excellent balance between richness and tension.
Storage potential
Ready to drink from 2027. Develops easily until 2050. Expect extra layers of brioche, honey blossom, and hazelnut, while the mineral backbone and salty length remain intact.

The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is more muscular than the Bienvenues, exhibiting notes of sweet orchard fruit and peach mingled with clear honey, toasted nuts and flowers. Full-bodied, satiny and textural, with good depth and grip, it's more layered and powerful.
The 2022 vintage has turned out very nicely at Domaine Leflaive. Picking decisions at this address in recent years, under the direction of Pierre Vincent, have tended to privilege freshness, and a couple of wines appeared to have been picked a little on the early side if one's tastes lean toward the texture and plenitude that only full maturity can impart; but overall, this is a strong vintage that is developing a touch of noble reduction in bottle and which is going to age with grace. As usual, élevage began with a year in barrel (from a variety of coopers, including Séguin Moreau and Chassin) followed by six months or so in tank on the lees before bottling under Diam 30.

Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru – 2016 – Wine Spectator – 95 Points
Though rich, this white is also dense, giving a feeling of intensity to the white peach, citronella and pastry aromas and flavors. Well-proportioned, yet will require some time to really harmonize and reveal all its charms. Long, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2032.

From: A Burgundy Intermezzo (Jul 2024)
The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a very refined bouquet, beautifully delineated, with a little more intensity than the Bienvenue. A touch of wild mint comes through with aeration. The palate has a twist of bitter lemon and is pretty saline on the mid-palate, though maybe the Bienvenue possesses a touch more finesse? It has a lovely texture (again) with a long, peppery aftertaste. Excellent.

Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a name that rings a bell. Chardonnay, tradition and progress come together beautifully here.
History of Domaine Leflaive
The story of Domaine Leflaive begins in the 18th century but truly takes shape in the twentieth. Joseph Leflaive, a former marine engineer, took over the family estate in 1905. After the phylloxera crisis he bought additional plots, replanted the vineyards, and started bottling under his own label. That laid the foundation for the estate as we know it today.
After his death in 1953, his sons Vincent and Jo took the lead. They strengthened the name both in Burgundy and abroad. In the 1990s Anne-Claude Leflaive stepped in. She made a bold move by converting the estate entirely to biodynamic farming. Since 2015, Brice de la Morandière, Anne-Claude’s nephew, has been in charge. He combines respect for tradition with innovations such as the sustainable cellar built in 2012.
Location in Puligny-Montrachet
Domaine Leflaive is located in the heart of Puligny-Montrachet, a small village in the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy. This region is known worldwide as the birthplace of Chardonnay. The limestone-rich soil and perfect exposure create wines with tension, freshness, and depth. Here everything revolves around terroir: small differences in slope or soil type give wines with their own unique character.
Grape varieties at Domaine Leflaive
The focus is entirely on Chardonnay. No red wine is made. That may sound limited, but this dedication is exactly what made the estate great. From a simple Bourgogne Blanc to the most legendary Grand Crus: all come from the same grape, yet from different parcels. This way you taste the pure differences between soil and location.
Specialities and famous vineyards
Domaine Leflaive owns parcels in some of the most prestigious vineyards in the world. Think Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. In addition, there are impressive Premier Crus such as Les Pucelles, Clavoillon, and Les Folatières. They also make a distinctive Meursault and an approachable Bourgogne Blanc. The latter comes from vineyards just outside Puligny and shows that even the entry-level wines at Leflaive carry plenty of character.
Biodynamic viticulture and cellar techniques
Since 1997 Domaine Leflaive has worked fully biodynamically. That means using natural preparations and following the rhythms of nature. No artificial chemicals, but full attention to the health of the soil. In the cellar the approach is patient: slow pressing, fermentations with minimal intervention, one year of ageing in oak barrels followed by six months in neutral vats. Since 2012 this has taken place in a remarkable cellar known as the ‘Egg Cellar’. This round building, insulated with straw and wood, is energy-efficient and designed to let the wines mature perfectly.
Interesting facts about Domaine Leflaive
- Before becoming a winegrower, Joseph Leflaive helped build the first French submarine.
- The estate’s Grand Cru Montrachet is only released after ten years of ageing in the cellar, so it can show its full complexity.
- Anne-Claude Leflaive received international acclaim as a pioneer in biodynamics and was awarded several prizes for her contribution.
