2022 Domaine Guillaume Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes is a characterful Pinot Noir from old vines in one of the most beloved lieux-dits of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The combination of vines dating back in part to 1937, classic vinification, and Guillaume Tardy's refined style yields a wine that beautifully combines power, finesse, and purity. It is a Nuits-Saint-Georges with plenty of energy, beautiful drinkability, and sufficient structure to continue developing for years to come.
Domaine Guillaume Tardy
Domaine Guillaume Tardy is a small-scale family estate of approximately 5.5 hectares in the Côte de Nuits. Since Guillaume Tardy took over the estate, he has further refined the wine style with a strong focus on terroir expression, precision, and elegance. The vineyards are managed increasingly sustainably and have now converted to organic viticulture. In the cellar, Guillaume remains true to a classic Burgundian approach, where fully destemmed grapes, cold maceration, and careful aging in French oak barrels ensure wines of great purity and aging potential.

Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes
Au Bas de Combe is situated on the northern side of Nuits-Saint-Georges, where calcareous soils and a relatively cool location produce elegant Pinot Noir with great tension and minerality. The Vieilles Vignes cuvée comes from old vines, a significant portion of which were planted as early as 1937. These old vines yield low returns and ensure extra concentration, complexity, and depth.
The 2022 volume
After a warm and sunny growing season, 2022 produced healthy, perfectly ripe grapes with an excellent balance between ripe fruit and fresh acidity. A few rain showers in August ensured the vines received sufficient water and the grapes retained their freshness. Guillaume Tardy harvested in early September and was able to work with exceptionally clean fruit, requiring only minimal selection.
Vinification
The grapes are fully destemmed and first undergo cold maceration to gently extract color and aromas. This is followed by classic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine then ages in French oak barrels from Tonnellerie Mérieux and Montgillard, among others, where the wood serves solely to support the wine and never dominates.
Scent, taste and character
The wine opens with refined aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and small red forest fruits, complemented by violets, wild herbs, sweet earth, and a subtle touch of broken limestone. A hint of white pepper adds extra tension to the aromatic profile.
On the palate, the 2022 is supple and refined, with ripe tannins that give the wine a silky texture. The fruit is bright and pure, while the fresh acidity provides liveliness and balance. The old vines lend extra depth without the wine losing its elegant character.
The finish is long, mineral, and harmonious, with notes of red fruit, fine spices, and a subtle earthy undertone. The wine already possesses great charm but simultaneously has sufficient structure to develop further over the next ten to fifteen years.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
The 2022 Domaine Guillaume Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes is already particularly attractive when young thanks to its refined style, but will develop further between 2025 and 2038.
Preferably serve the wine at 15 to 16°C.
Excellent with duck breast, veal, guinea fowl, mushrooms, roasted poultry, lamb, and soft, aged cheeses.

One of the highlights of the range is the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes, a lovely wine that mingles aromas of plums and cherries with hints of petals and sweet soil tones in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated, with bright acids and powdery tannins, it's well worth seeking out. The vines here were planted in 1937.
This was my first visit to Guillaume Tardy, who has been at the helm at this 5.5-hectare family domaine since around 2011. The style here is full and flavorful, with plenty of fruit, flesh and structure. In 2020, harvest lasted between 28 and 31 August—the advantage of a small surface area in a year such as this. In the cellar, the grapes are entirely destemmed and see at least one week's cold soak at 10 degrees, followed by classical macerations in stainless steel. Élevage is in barrels from Tonnelleries Meryieux and Montgillard, favoring Allier oak.

From: Now, For My Latest Trick: Burgundy 2022 (Jan 2024)
The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe Vieilles Vignes has a well-defined, crushed stone infused nose, touches of wild hedgerow coming through with time. You might assume there are a bit of whole bunches in here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a dash of white pepper with a delicate finish. Not long-term, but lots of buvabilité here.
- By Neal Martin on November 2023
Guillaume Tardy popped his head out of the winery’s upstairs window and told me he was coming down. This is a winemaker who’s tweaking the formula a little, undertaking lighter plowing in the vineyard in order not to disturb the vines, converting to organic farming, now in its second year, and de-stemming while leaving berries whole to do a semi-carbonic maceration from the 2023 vintage. Those wines must wait for 12 months – the 2022 was under discussion today. “It was quite a sunny vintage during the growing season with just some rain around June 21 and 22,” he tells me. “We didn’t suffer too much hail damage in Fixin and Gevrey-Chambertin. We had two rainstorms in August, which helped with yields and meant the younger vines did not suffer. When we pruned the vineyard in the autumn, it was very hard as vines had put energy in the fruit. Some of the vines died after all the recent dry summers. I started picking on September 1, and there was less to sort out than in 2023. Everything is de-stemmed. The fruit was not too ripe; grapes picked around 12.5% alcohol, pH between 3.3 and 3.5, with less than half a degree of chaptalization. The wines are better than I thought a year ago.”
