Description
When it comes to value for money in Bordeaux, you quickly end up at Château Le Crock. This winery from Saint-Estèphe knows how to deliver such high quality every year that the winery is not only known for its excellent wines, but also for its insane price/quality. It is not without reason that Château Le Crock is one of the very select wineries that managed to obtain the highest Cru Bourgeois 'Exceptionnel' status two years ago. Château Le Crock is owned by the Cuvelier family, who also own Château Léoville Poyferré and is made with the same dedication.
The terroir is of high quality and is located between the big names such as Ch. Cos d'Estournel, Ch. Montrose and Ch. Haut Marbuzet. Château Le Crock has 32 hectares of vineyards on an exceptional terroir consisting of gravel, surface sand and clay. The advantages of these characteristics are the ability to retain heat, and to provide a natural water reserve. The vineyard is spread over three different settlement areas and enjoys an exceptional richness and aromatic diversity. The proximity of the Gironde acts as a thermal regulator, avoiding excessively high temperatures.
The Chateau Le Crock is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, supplemented with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the glass, the Le Crock has a deep garnet-purple colour and lively, open aromas of crushed blackcurrants, redcurrant jelly and beaten blackcurrants with hints of mossy bark and pencil lead. The medium-bodied flavour delivers a good amount of crisp black fruit with a slightly chewy texture and a refreshing finish. From the start, the fruit is ripe and soft, the tannins are extremely fine for a St Estèphe. What a pleasure to taste this. The Cabernets Sauvignons reach an absolute high point here in ripeness, energy and subtlety! The finish is also extremely long and lasting. No wonder this cru was given the title "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel"!

A blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Le Crock reveals a delicate, elegant bouquet of dark wild berries, spices, cherries, flowers and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, dense and layered, it's enrobing with a delicate, elegantly structured core of fruit enhanced by velvety tannins and a fresh, menthol-inflected finish. This is a strong performance.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Le Crock is a dense, potent wine. A blast of dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, licorice, dried flowers and scorched earth are all super-concentrated in the glass. The 2022 possesses notable textural richness right out of the gate. I would give this a year or two in bottle, at the very least. At 21 hectoliters per hectare, yields were punishingly low because of intense heat and drought. For these reasons, the château decided to bottle only the Grand Vin and no second wine. The 2022 is a very beautiful Le Crock, a bit exotic perhaps, but compelling.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Le Crock matures in 30% new oak including 500-liter vessels and amphorae. This is well-defined and focused on the nose. Understated at first, opening with blackberry, briar and pencil shavings aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, black pepper and graphite, taut and linear toward its almost Pauillac-like, certainly tannic finish. Excellent stuff from the l'équipe Poyferré.

Château Le Crock Saint Estèphe is located exactly between Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose. It was already a well-known château in the 18th and 19th centuries, then under the name Bastérot-Ségur. In 1776 it was classified as the second cru of Saint Estèphe. In 1804, the winery received the title of Premier Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. To this day, it has been classified as Cru Bourgeois. The modern history of the château begins in 1903. In that year the old Bordeaux family Cuvelier buys the Château. This family owns several wine estates. They are best known for their activities at Château Léoville-Poyferré, the crown jewel of the Cuvelier family. This also means that the same oenology team is responsible for winemaking here. Michel Rolland was hired as an advisor in 1995. He is one of the best oenologists in Bordeaux. The 33 hectares of vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The terroir is identical to that of their world-famous neighbors. Much has been invested in the cellars and vineyards in recent years, which has resulted in a significant improvement in the quality of the wines. (“This vineyard, owned by Didier Cuvelier, the proprietor of Leoville-Poyferre, is finally coming to life.” -Robert Parker) Château Le Crock is one of the most beautiful, almost fairytale-like châteaus in Bordeaux, and has a very impressive building .
