Description
The history of Château Latour-Martillac and its family heritage
Château Latour-Martillac, located in the commune of Martillac in the Graves region of Bordeaux, takes its name from the medieval tower that adorns the estate. In 1871, the estate came to the attention of Edouard Kressmann, a Bordeaux wine merchant, who was impressed by the quality of the estate's white wines. His son, Alfred Kressmann, purchased the château in 1929. Since then, the estate has remained in the hands of the Kressmann family, with the current management being in the hands of Tristan and Loïc Kressmann.
Pessac-Léognan: terroir and climate of the Graves region
The Pessac-Léognan appellation, created in 1987, is located in the northern part of the Graves region, south of the city of Bordeaux. The area is known for its gravelly soils, which provide excellent drainage and heat retention, which is favorable for the ripening of grapes. The climate is temperate maritime with sufficient rainfall and sunshine, which contributes to the development of complex and elegant wines.
Grape composition, harvest and vinification of the Pessac-Léognan Rouge
The Château Latour-Martillac Pessac-Léognan Rouge is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a small percentage of Petit Verdot. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, some of which are new, to develop complexity and structure.
Tasting notes: colour, aroma and flavour profile
In the glass, the wine presents itself with a deep ruby red color. The bouquet reveals aromas of blackcurrant, plum, cedar and subtle spicy notes. In the mouth, the wine is full and balanced, with ripe tannins and a fresh acidity. The finish is long and elegant, with nuances of dark fruit and a hint of mineral notes typical of the Graves soils.

The 2022 Latour Martillac is darker and more somber than during the en primeur tasting, revealing aromas of spices, dark berries and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, round and supple, it's juicy with good depth at the core, an assertive tannic frame and a long, ethereal, delicately spicy finish. This is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot.

An attractive Latour-Martillac showing ripe black cherries, dark plums and touches of cigar and fine spices. An underlying mineral twist makes it even more interesting. Juicy and ripe but fresh, with a medium to full body and a matrix of fine, firm tannins beneath the fruit, which shows good fleshiness. Beautifully balanced and long. Drink from 2027.

From: A Place Beyond Praise: Bordeaux 2022 (Feb 2025)
The 2022 Latour-Martillac is riper and sunnier than its peers on the nose, with brambly red fruit, wild strawberry, raspberry coulis, light allspice and pencil shaving scents emerging over time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry. I appreciate the structure and freshness, though the finish is a bit heavy-handed compared to the best wines in the appellation. Still, it may improve with time in bottle; indeed, the second and third bottles felt more nuanced.

The 2022 Latour-Martillac is s powerful, brooding wine, just as it was en primeur. A blast of dark red fruit, leather, spice, dried herbs and licorice are all delineated in the glass. The 2022 packs a pretty intense punch. A few years in bottle will help to some degree.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Latour-Martillac is brilliant. Bright, focused and pulsing with energy, the 2022 is super-impressive. Crushed rocks, white pepper, chalk and blood orange give the 2022 a gorgeous upper register of intensity to play off a core of vibrant red-toned fruit. The 2022 is hugely promising. Tasted two times.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Latour-Martillac has a slightly ripe nose than its peers: candied red berry fruit, orange rind, light loamy aromas percolating through with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite thickly-textured tannins, weighty and powerful with cedar and mocha-infused black fruit on the assertive finish. It lacks a bit of finesse now, but I can see this surprising a few people with the wherewithal to cellar for a decade.
