Description
Château Haut-Bages Libéral is a historic wine estate in the Pauillac appellation, Bordeaux. The estate takes its name from the Bages plateau and the Libéral family, who owned it in the 18th century. Since 1855, it has been classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé. It is now managed by Claire Villars-Lurton, who also manages Château Ferrière and Château La Gurgue.
Sustainable wine growing and terroir
The estate covers 30 hectares and has been certified organic since 2019. The vineyards are located on gravel and limestone soils, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The proximity of the Gironde ensures a temperate climate, which contributes to the ripening of the grapes.
Vinification and maturation
The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo fermentation in concrete and stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new.
Tasting notes Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2022
The 2022 vintage is composed of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot. The wine has a deep ruby red color. On the nose aromas of red currant, blueberry, blackberry, cedar, mocha and graphite. The Château Haut-Bages Libéral 2022 is powerful and explosive from the first moment. An abundance of dark red cherry and plum fruit, rose petals, blood orange, incense, licorice and mocha flood the palate. Salty notes effortlessly extend the mid-palate and finish. This is one of Claire Villars-Lurton's most exuberant, full-bodied wines. The purity and primary intensity of the fruit are remarkable. The Haut-Bages Libéral is matured in a combination of 40% new oak, 40% once-used barrels and 20% a mix of concrete and amphora. This is one of the hidden gems of 2022.

A classic Pauillac nose, showing ripe currants, graphite, pencil shavings and cocoa powder. Full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless coating of fine, dusty tannins. The wine is broad, dissolved and long, with good drive. Approachable now thanks to its balance and complexity but will be much better after 2027.

From: 2022 Bordeaux in Bottle: Living in the Present (Jan 2025)
The 2022 Haut-Bages Libéral is huge and explosive right out of the gate. A rush of dark red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, blood orange, incense, licorice and mocha saturates the palate. Saline notes extend the mid-palate and finish effortlessly. This is one of the most exuberant, ample wines I have tasted from Claire Villars-Lurton. I would give the 2022 a number of years in bottle to shed some baby fat. Today, it tastes almost like a barrel sample! The purity and primary intensity of the fruit is remarkable. The Haut-Bages Libéral was raised in a combination of 40% new oak, 40% once-used barrels and 20% a mix of concrete and amphora. This is one of the under-the-radar gems of 2022.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Haut-Bages Libéral is shaping up to be a jewel. Bright and aromatic, with notable structure, the 2022 is beautifully put together. Red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint and blood orange all race across the palate. A wine of dynamic energy and drive, Haut-Bages Libéral is super-impressive in this tasting. I can’t wait to taste this from bottle. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot.

From: You’re Unbelievable: Bordeaux 2022 (May 2023)
The 2022 Haut-Bages-Libéral was picked from 6 to 26 September and is being raised in 40% new oak, plus 20% in concrete tanks and amphorae. Yields were 45hL/ha, higher than many other estates, which Clare Villars-Lurton cites as a result of their long-term application of biodynamic viticulture and use of cover crops. It has an entrancing bouquet with blackberry, briary, crushed stone and light estuarine scents, understated initially but rapidly gaining intensity. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and saline with sculpted tannins, stunning balance and a mineral finish. This is an outstanding, vivacious 2022 from proprietor Claire Villars-Lurton.
