Description
The former owner and namesake, Louis Gaspard d'Estournel, was known as the Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe. He decorated the château in Indian style, threw lavish parties, and lived beyond his means. By 1852, he was completely destitute and forced to sell his estate. He died a year later. Cos d'Estournel is perhaps the château with the most innovative and advanced winemaking technology. From harvest to aging in bottles, everything is meticulously monitored and carried out with the utmost care. For example, they managed to create a vinification process in which the wine is transported without pumps. All operations are carried out by gravity. In 1855, the château was awarded 2nd Grand Cru Classé status.
Situated on the edge of the plateau near the Gironde estuary, Cos d'Estournel enjoys a remarkable geographical location. The vineyard benefits from a maritime climate and gentle natural ventilation, while being sheltered from extreme weather conditions. Cos d'Estournel comprises a rolling landscape of deep gravel and clay, enjoying an unparalleled setting with two hills and a central plateau. This location gives it an incredible diversity of terroirs, and the extensive knowledge of the vineyard allows it to identify the potential of each plot, unleash its full potential, and bring out the very best.
The 2022 vintage is a time of countless emotions: Cos d'Estournel's characteristic opulence is a wonderful counterpoint to the vintage's luminous quality and a freshness that is somewhat unexpected given the year's unusual weather. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (61%), Merlot (37%), Cabernet Franc (1%), and Petit Verdot (1%). The wine's characteristic intensity complements a lush aromatic palette that encompasses the freshness of graphite and white pepper, the elegance of tea, and sweet notes of licorice, cherry, and blackberry. With an incredibly refined texture that evokes a touch of cashmere, the 2022 Cos d'Estournel is a captivating wine with a seemingly endless finish and exceptional aging potential.
This is a 1.5 litre magnum – even tastier, more festive and with a longer drinking window.

Dankzij de verfijnde textuur en de frisse elegance past deze wijn perfect bij smaakvolle gerechten zoals langzaam gegaard lamsvlees, wildgerechten of gehaktballen met kruidige saus. The 2022 Cos d'Estournel unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, plum liqueur and rich spices, followed by a full-bodied, broad-shouldered and muscular palate that's rich and structured, with a ripe core of fruit and chewy tannins. Harvest dates were relatively early this year, and maturation is occurring in only 50% new oak; yet the 2022's chunky, glass-staining style makes it Ducru Beaucaillou's only rival for the title of most extracted second growth of the Médoc.

Unique structure to this wine and very Cos with all the spices and dark fruits. Tobacco and cedar. It's starts off full-bodied and flavorful, but continues to unfold in an energetic and weightless way. Savory and primary. Al dente grapes here. Exciting and thought-provoking.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Cos d’Estournel is stunning. Rich and statuesque in bearing, the 2022 captures all the best this vintage had to offer. A wine of precision and power, the 2022 balances the intensity of the year but without veering into the realm of the exotic, as was the case in vintages such as 2005 and 2009. It marries ripeness and classical rigor in a style that is quite appealing. I imagine the 2022 will need a good 15-20 years to be at its finest. Harvest took place between September 7 and 23, exceptionally early.
- By Antonio Galloni on April 2023
“Things were pretty normal up until the end of March,” Technical Director Dominique Arangoïts told me at Cos d’Estournel. “Intense heat started in May. Flowering began in the middle of the month. By June we were in a water deficit, something that is extremely rare so early in the season. We had some hail in our northernmost parcels. The rest of the year was very hot and dry, but with cool nights at the end that allowed the vines to breathe. Harvest ran from August 29 to September 13 for the white and September 7 to 23 for the reds.”

Château Cos d'Estournel is a winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Bordeaux region of France. It is also the name of the red wine produced by this property. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
Château Cos d'Estournel produces the eponymous grand vin, the second wine since the 1994 vintage, Les Pagodes de Cos from the estate's younger vines, as well as Château Marbuzet from fruit from nearby plots. The property is adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighboring commune of Pauillac. The name Cos refers to a "mound of pebbles" in the Gascon dialect and the name Cos d'Estournel was given in 1810 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel.
The estate has changed hands several times throughout its history, beginning in 1852 when it was purchased by English banker Charles Cecil Martyns. In 1869 it was sold to the Spanish Errazu family, only to be sold again 20 years later, in 1889, to the Hostein family from Bordeaux. Through his marriage to Marie-Thérèse Hostein, Louis-Victor Charmolue, who also owned Château Montrose, acquired control of Cos d'Estournel in 1894. In 1917 it was sold to Fernand Ginestet. The chateau has remained in the Ginestet family ever since, becoming part of Domaines Prats in 1970, the combined property of the Ginestet and Prats families, and controlled by Bruno Prats.
In June 2008, it was announced that Michel Reybier, the current owner of Cos d'Estournel, has purchased Napa winery Chateau Montelena. However, in November 2008, this agreement was canceled, the termination of the transaction by Chateau Montelena allegedly due to the fact that Reybier Investments had "been unable to meet its obligations". From an estate of 100 hectares, the vineyard area extends over 70 hectares (170 acres), divided into 30 parcels, mainly composed of the grape varieties 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with a small cultivation of Cabernet Franc and Petit verdot that seems participate too little in modern production. Annual production is typically 32,000 cases.
