Description
The Aiurri winery: history, owners and region
Aiurri is a young Rioja Alavesa project by Pedro Ruiz, director of Alma Carraovejas in Valladolid. Founded in Leza, at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, Aiurri combines modern insights with centuries-old Rioja tradition. The vineyards are located around Sonsierra, Leza and San Vicente de la Sonsierra, regions that benefit from a microclimate where Atlantic and Mediterranean influences meet. The silky soil – clay-sand with a lot of lime – and clonal biodiversity (Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and some white varieties) offer optimal conditions for expressive, balanced wines.
Sustainable cultivation and organic vineyards
Aiurri works exclusively with organic viticulture. The plots are small and planted with 50 to 80 year old vines. Thanks to the deep root structures of the vines, a natural balance is created between acidity, phenolic ripeness and a refined structure. The viticulture is completely plot-oriented, with the aim of optimally expressing the character of each individual vineyard block.
Landua 2022: grapes, harvest and vinification
Landua 2022 is a blend of mainly Tempranillo, with additional grape varieties such as Graciano, Garnacha and some white varieties. The harvest took place manually between September and early October. After a strict selection, the grapes were transferred to the fermentation tanks using gravity. Fermentation took place spontaneously, without added yeasts, in a combination of French oak barrels and concrete vats. Each vineyard and plot was vinified separately.
Maturation was tailored to the origin: grapes from Leza were aged for 12 months in French oak, while the plots from San Vicente de la Sonsierra were aged partly in large foudres and partly in barriques for nine months. The final blend was aged for a further seven months in concrete to maintain freshness and integrate structure. The wine was bottled in the spring of 2024.
Maturation: structure and storage potential
Landua 2022 is characterized by its refined structure and balance between power and freshness. The careful barrel maturation ensures layering, while the concrete post-maturing keeps the terroir pure. Thanks to the firm yet refined tannin structure, this vintage also offers excellent storage potential. Vinous awarded the wine 91 points and characterizes it as “compact and juicy with firm tannins and a balanced structure” with a drinking window of 2025 to 2040. This makes it an excellent choice for the cellar and gastronomy.
Color, aroma and flavor profile of Landua 2022
Colour: Deep red with a vibrant purple hue.
Nose: The nose opens with ripe plums and lightly candied cherries, followed by lavender, violets and balsamic notes. The nose is rich but controlled, with floral accents elegantly interwoven with spices and dark chocolate.
Taste: in the mouth the wine is compact and energetic, with juicy black fruit, firm but integrated tannins and excellent freshness. The structure is harmonious, with a long, slightly floral and balsamic finish.
Landua 2022: character and experience
Landua 2022 is a characterful Rioja Alavesa with modern precision and traditional depth. The wine offers a refined combination of power, freshness and aromatic complexity. This vintage shows riper fruit than its predecessor from 2021, with more pronounced balsamic elements. The compact style, combined with its aging potential until 2040, makes Landua 2022 an ideal wine for the connoisseur and sommelier looking for nuance, terroir and a wine with a wide gastronomic potential.

In 2020 Alma arrives in Leza (Rioja Alavesa) to develop one of its most unique projects. Aiurri is located in one of the smallest villages in Alava, able to excite for its environment and its cultural, heritage and wine richness. Small vineyard plots with a great clonal biodiversity growing at the foot of the Toloño mountain range.
The character of Rioja Alavesa
The terroir at the feet of Toloño
The orography has an important impact on the climatology of the vineyard. The mountains contribute to the creation of a climatic crossroads where continental and Atlantic conditions intermingle, preventing the humidity of the Cantabrian Sea from crossing the border and having an effect on the vineyard and the grapes. The natural and landscape heritage of the environment coexists with vestiges of the Copper Age.
Aiurri is made up of a mosaic of small plots of old vines with a great clonal biodiversity that grow in the shelter of the Sierra de Toloño. The layout of the vineyards on terraces and steep slopes allows for natural drainage and greater contact with the flow of wind and solar radiation, favoring the vine cycle.
Aiurri’s winemaking
The origin and diversity of the terroir from which the grapes are born give the wines their distinctive character. In search of the maximum expression and uniqueness of each plot and with the aspiration of Leza being recognized as a reference locality, the wines are classified into: singular vineyards, municipality wines and zone wines.
The orientation, soil structure, altitude, varieties and microclimate of each vineyard provide particular characteristics to express the best of each vineyard. The vinification by parcels allows us to increase our knowledge of each vineyard and its environment. In the winery we work with the utmost respect, with spontaneous fermentations and soft and very controlled temperature and extractions to achieve the bottling of each landscape. For malolactic fermentation and aging we use tanks of different formats: foudres, wooden, concrete and stainless steel vats and French oak barrels.
Aiurri: plot-based viticulture
Aiurri seeks to capture the essence of unique vineyards that make up one of the reference winegrowing areas in our country. Small plots of clonal biodiversity, with different orientations, soils, altitude and microclimate that are worked individually to transmit the best of each vineyard and its environment.
Loam soils with a high limestone content and a good amount of organic matter. The aim is to revalue some of the most important vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa, recovering and bringing back to life the old vineyards of Leza. A commitment to the landscape, the wine-growing culture, the heritage and its people.
