Description
Emilio Rojo is part of the Vina Mein winery - without a doubt, one of the most beautiful wineries in the Ribeiro region of Galicia and the specialist in Treixadura and white and red wines with Atlantic Sea injection.
Emilio Rojo is an icon in Spanish wine growing. He produces a few thousand bottles per year at most. The wine comes from one and the same plot on which native varieties of Ribeiro occur criss-cross. Emilio Rojo marks the pinnacle of wine making and field blending which is now also used by other greats such as Telmo Rodriguez. Having different grape varieties in 1 vineyard is a very old concept and is now increasingly applied because the biodiversity keeps the vineyards much healthier and the winemaker can add much more complexity (early-ripening and late-ripening grapes to get beautiful fruit but good acidity). Emilio Roja works with the local varieties: Treixadura Godello Albariño Torrontés Lado and Caíño.
Emilio Rojo 2021: A Harvest That Captures the Character of the Avia Valley
The Emilio Rojo 2021 comes from a single vineyard that embodies the unique character of the Avia Valley. With sábrego soils (decomposed granite), a changeable and extreme climate, and a rich diversity of grape varieties in each plot, this wine reflects the essence of its environment. Grape varieties such as Treixadura, Lado, Godello, Albariño, Caíño Blanco, Torrontés and Loureira demonstrate the richness and biodiversity of this region. The knowledge passed down through generations, from small winegrower (colleiteiro) to colleiteiro, has taken the production of this wine to an exceptional level.
The year 2021 was challenging, with a rainy winter in which a large amount of precipitation fell from late January to early March. Bud formation began in late March, but the heavy rainfall meant that the plots had to be managed with extra care. The summer only brought sunshine and warmth from late July, which favoured the growth and development of the vineyards. Although the year seemed to be turning out to be an easy harvest, a few rainy days in September caused complications. Both in the vineyard and in the winery, the grapes were selected bunch by bunch to ensure the perfect ripening point and the highest quality. The harvest was carried out in four phases: on 6, 12, 18 and 22 September. 2021 proved to be a turning point in the production of Viña Meín-Emilio Rojo, in which the balance in the vineyard was found and the essence of future vintages was defined.
The Vina Mein Emilio Rojo 2021 has a complex nose with varied, integrated aromas that express the landscape, grape varieties, soil and climate. On the palate, the wine has an energetic and elegant texture, with great density and impressive depth.

Issue 241 End of February 2019, The Wine Advocate
Even if it's still too early, I'll write a little about the 2018 Emilio Rojo, because you never know when you're going to be able to encounter these wines again. This comes from a year with very high acidity and some malic acid, which Emilio keeps, as "there's no need to put the wine through malolactic." It took some 12 days to start fermenting. "And I was getting worried," Emilio said. "But it finally took off and was dry in no more than seven days." Fermentation is at 22 to 23 degrees Celsius, not too cold, so it develops aromas and is done with indigenous yeasts. This is still an infant, with all the lees, cloudy, with pure and clean aromas that remind me of the 2017, with a balsamic touch. The palate reminds me of the 2016, with pungent flavors and bright acidity, perhaps one of the freshest years to date. This won't be bottled for over one year, so we'll have to see how it develops. However, it looks like another triumph from Mr. Rojo, who seems to have been on a roll since 2014.
I had a very relaxed visit with Emilio Rojo. I met with him in a bar in the village of Leiro, and we walked up to his 1.2-hectare vineyard through an incredible path with stone walls covered in moss and abandoned old houses. It took us a good two hours to walk up, around the vineyard and down again to drive to his tiny winery in the village of Arnoia, where he was born. Unfortunately, he doesn't keep any bottled wine. "In a good year, I produce 5,000 liters, and I don't have enough for all the requests from my customers," he explained. "Even if I try to keep a few bottles for me, there's always something—people turn up or whatever, my sister takes one six-pack for Christmas, and I always end up with no wine," he explained. So we only tasted unbottled wine from 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Viña Meín is one of those wineries that instantly sparks curiosity. Small in scale, but big in story. Tucked away in the green hills of Galicia, wine has been made here for centuries — and you can taste that history in every bottle.
Viña Meín history & location
The estate is located in Leiro, in the heart of Ribeiro, one of Spain’s oldest wine regions. As early as the 12th century, monks from the San Clodio monastery were cultivating vines in this valley. Centuries later, in 1988, Javier Alén breathed new life into the property by replanting the historic vineyards. Today, Viña Meín has grown into a benchmark in Ribeiro, with a strong focus on local grape varieties and authentic wines.
Grape varieties in Ribeiro
The strength of Viña Meín lies in the diversity of its grapes. Treixadura is the leading variety, loved for its fresh and aromatic character. Alongside it are Albariño, Godello, Torrontés, Loureira, Lado, and Albilla. For the reds, they work with native grapes such as Caíño Longo, Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto. Together, they create a wide palette of flavors that is unique to Ribeiro.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards are spread across small plots in the Avia Valley. The landscape is rugged and hilly, with terraces and steep slopes. The soil is mainly granite and sand, locally known as “sábrego.” The climate plays a crucial role: warm days and cool nights, with temperature differences that can reach up to twenty degrees. This slows down ripening and gives the wines tension and aromatic depth. Each vineyard has its own personality, which shines through in the diversity of the wines.
How the wines are made
At Viña Meín, it’s all about respecting the grape. Harvesting is done by hand, in small crates. Most of the white wines ferment in stainless steel to preserve freshness, while the best plots are aged in large oak barrels and spend months on the lees. This adds depth and complexity, without letting oak dominate. The red wines are traditionally fermented and aged, with a focus on finesse rather than sheer power.
Specialties & facts
What makes Viña Meín stand out is how it blends old traditions with modern techniques. In 2019, the winery joined forces with Pago de Carraovejas, a renowned producer from Ribera del Duero. Since then, there has been more attention to sustainability and precision in the vineyards. Winemaker Laura Montero leads the cellar, with support from French oenologist Dominique Roujou de Boubée. Together, they are putting Ribeiro’s native grapes more firmly on the map.
