Description
The 2 new white wines from Emilio Moro are El Zarzal and La Revelia and saw the light of day in the 2016 vintage. Both are based on the noble grape Godello and the vineyards are in the Bierzo. They have been working on these new (white) wines for more than 10 years to produce beautiful wines that fit a high-end wine company such as Emilio Moro. That they are not the only ones who do this is evidenced by Mauro, who is also making great progress with his Godellos.
The El Zarzal is produced with grapes from 20-year-old vines in Bierzo, which are fermented in stainless steel and aged in 2500 liter oak barrels for 8 months. In the glass, the el Zarzal has a light pale golden color and the wine is clear. On the nose the wine is fresh, clean with a good fruit base and subtle citrus scents with white flowers. The almost imperceptible oak notes (brioche, toasted bread) give the wine even more depth and complexity. In the mouth it is fresh and clear, with a good weight and polished nuances and beautiful acidity and a somewhat salty minerality that is so typical of a good Godello. Definitely worth mentioning is the great design and artistic labels of these new white members of the Emilio Moro family, which were designed by the artist Domingo Zapata who designed all the labels and the box. David is from the island of Mallorca in Spain and moved to the USA, NYC, many years ago

The 2019 El Zarzal fermented in oak at controlled temperature and matured in French 2,500-liter oak foudres with the lees. There is nice balance here and good ripeness without excess. The oak is imperceptible, and the wine is fruit-driven, primary and nicely textured, with a floral and spicy touch. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2020.

Bright, green-tinged straw. Sharply focused Meyer lemon, pear and honeysuckle aromas take on smoky mineral and spicy ginger flourishes with air. Silky and well-delineated on the palate, offering vibrant orchard and citrus fruit flavors that deepen slowly with aeration. Shows depth as well as energy and finishes sappy and long, with resonating floral and mineral notes.

The family business Emilio Moro has been located in Pesquera del Duero since 1892. This bodega boasts a three-generation tradition and includes vineyards over 90 years old. Due to their long history, they have been able to expand their vineyards very specifically with mostly Tinto Fino. The Finca Resalso and Crianza excel in purity, elegance and complexity. The top cuvées are of rare class; the very old vines of these two 'Pagos' give an extremely low yield resulting in very complex wines with a great depth and temperament.
In 1987 Emilio Moro first launched his own wines under his own label. With about 200 hectares of vineyards and a total annual production of 1.5 million bottles, it is a modern and large company. Thanks to its high quality standards and innovative management, it is also one of the leading wine companies. This applies not only in Spain but money worldwide and this is also confirmed that it has been nominated by Wine Enthusiast as Best Winery of the World. Emilio Moro's focus on Research, Development and Innovation is impressive and the enormous focus on quality is certainly an important factor in the high quality of all wines, but let's not forget that the old Emilio Moro vineyards are located in the most beautiful part of the Ribera del Duero with a completely unique and extremely suitable terroir located at a great height. In 2017, Wine Spectator placed the Emilio Moro in 59th place in the Prestigious Top 100 of the world's best wines.
In 2008, Emilio Moro died at the age of 75. In the same year, the Emilio Moro foundation was established, which is committed to providing poor regions of the world with clean drinking water and improving living conditions. Javier & José Moro are now in charge.
The emilio moro portfolio consists of 5 red wines, all of which are made from the regional variant of the Tempranillo (tinto fino). The special thing is that a very old pure clone is used. The vineyards range from 30-90 years old, but even the younger vineyards are from the lots of this unique clone. Emilio moro does not use the terms Crianza or Reserva and the name of the wine stands for the character of the wine.
