2021 Compañía de Vinos Tricó Albariño

A new member of the SAC Alma Carraovejas group is Compañía de Vinos Tricó. There were already wines from Ossian, Aiurri from Rioja, Bodegas Marañones from Sierra Gredos and nature Milsetentayseis and Pago di Carraovejas from Ribera del Duero. All references for the appellation and now they have added Compañía de Vinos Tricó from Rías Baixas to their beautiful portfolio. What is very special is that the model at the Alma Carraovejas group is that each winery produces wines in accordance with the high quality requirements under the full responsibility and the winemaking team of Carraovejas. So it is not just adding a winery, but they only release the wine from the moment it is produced under the supervision of the group and that always involves substantial investments and sometimes takes years.

Compañía de Vinos Tricó has been part of the portfolio for a number of years, but it was not until the 2021 vintage that they released the wine to the market in the summer of 2024. Tricó 2021 is a showcase of a project in which the Albariño grape comes into its own and shows its aging potential. This wine comes from the area of Condado do Tea, on the high slopes of the Miño, where small vineyards are surrounded by forests. Here, the climate together with the vineyard provide a balance between low yields and a winemaking process focused on the vineyard itself. From the beginning of the project, the focus has been on understanding each plot and adapting the viticulture to find the optimal ripening point. Tricó represents the freshness of the Albariño grape, the smoothness of the Condado and the balance of a viticulture focused on extraordinary wines. It is the refinement of a unique environment.

The winter of 2021 was rainy, with a high amount of precipitation. Bud break occurred early and the rainfall required a very careful approach in the spring. At the end of July, the weather stabilized, which facilitated the management of the vineyard. The 2021 vintage was marked by several rainy days at the end of August and the beginning of September. We can consider the 2021 vintage as an example of an Atlantic cycle.

Inland in the province of Pontevedra, in the northern part of the Miño, lies the sub-region of Condado do Tea. This is a historical area for Albariño vineyards, where the maximum balance in ripeness is traditionally achieved thanks to the difference in temperature between day and night and a moderate maritime influence. Without the storms of the Atlantic coast, the high rainfall that reaches the Valeixe area is drained by the poor soils of weathered granite. The vines grow on a pergola training system where the vines are trained at a height of about two metres. This allows the vineyard to receive a lot of sunlight on the leaves, protects the grape bunch and avoids humidity in the soil.

The plots used to make Tricó 2021 are harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripeness. Upon arrival at the winery, the bunches are pressed whole to preserve the organoleptic characteristics of each plot. The wine undergoes alcoholic fermentation after a settling period of 24 to 48 hours. Without malolactic fermentation and without cold stabilization, the fresh characteristics of the variety are preserved. The wine is aged for one year in tanks and one year in bottle before being released.

Compañía de Vinos Tricó Albariño 2021 is a fresh and lively white wine. On the nose it reveals aromas of green apple and citrus fruits, with a subtle hint of peach. On the palate it is light and has a balanced acidity that enhances its liveliness.
